Despite their initial efforts resulted in $900 million in inventory writedowns, Microsoft is taking a second shot at the tablet market with its latest devices under the Surface brand – the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2.

When it was announced last year, it was a shock departure from what Microsoft had traditionally relied on for Windows – release the software, and rely on its third-party OEM partners to push products running the OS.
