Sydney will become the first city in Australia to commence another trial in mobile television; but unlike the first trial held between 2005 and 2007, you won’t need to get a new phone from either Nokia and Samsung to watch the channels – as the phones are commercially available.
While the phones selected are from LG and Nokia, the latest trial will see 200 Optus mobile customers selected to participate in a six week trial. The purpose of this trial is to demonstrate a potential use of the spectrum for two planned datacasting channels for mobile TV.
There will be nine channels that will be broadcasting using the new DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) standard, which is a superset of the DVB-T standard used in digital television here in Australia. They include ABC1, Seven Digital and Fox Sport News.
