China shuts down 91 websites for porn, more to come?

Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua is reporting that 91 websites in China have been shut down because of pornographic or lewd content since last Thursday, after the government announced that it will launch a crack down on such content.

Sites like “www.789b.com” and “www.678tp.cn” have been inaccessible since Sunday, as they have said that such content was “harming” the physical and mental health of young people, and there could be more websites being shutdown as the government continues its month-long crackdown.

“Authorities have vowed to beef up crackdown efforts in the following days and urged law-breakers to voluntarily turn themselves in to local public security departments,” a Xinhua report has said.

And like mentioned in a previous article, it is not only pornographic sites that are targeted in the crackdown; but popular search sites like Google China and Baidu, the top two search sites in China, were also targeted and were “named and shamed” along with 31 other websites.

Pornography is banned in China, but the internet has made it possible for pornography to enter into the country, especially once a proxy is used, like it is used to browse certain sites that have been blocked in China.

Thanks for coming onboard!
