.asia will be opening registrations to governments wanting geographical names (like china.asia, japan.asia, vietnam.asia) and people who have trademarks before March 31, 2004 and are in use. Other such trademarks and companies have to wait until November 13.
The registrar DotAsia, who run other domain names from Asia, says it will restrict it to the Asia Pacific Region, which includes Australia.
.asia joins other domain names like “.eu” for The European Union and “.cat” for the Catalan language as regional domains. There have also been calls for a .berlin, .nyc and .paris domains. Since the .com boom, The US has been using the .com and .net domains as their own, even though they have been assigned the “.us” domain name by ICAAN.
