Just before we break for the Christmas holidays, we want to share this with you. A man has used (like a boss) internet memes to assist him in his proposal to his girlfriend in Malaysia. And for those who want to know the answer, you’ll have to watch the video after the jump.

Timothy Tiah sneaked up, with some help of their friends, to interrupt a dinner his girlfriend Audrey Ling was having; and began showing her outside the restaurant printed placecards with the Socially Awkward Penguin, Y U NO Guy, Impossibru and, of course, a cat.

Enjoy, and have a merry Christmas.

We also find out that Tom, James and Stewart really should be on the podcast since Terence is forced to use a crappy free Skype Recorder rather than the professional Skype recording studios from Tom and Stewart. Don’t worry, they are “studying” (code for playing Minecraft).

So enjoy the episode – and just wait for next week. We’ll get much better. Don’t forget to subscribe!!

Yes, now you can lead a pack of wolves. And while the sound effects for the wolves have not been finalised yet, you can use them as a way to kill mobs and the other animal inhabitants. And apologies for sounding gushy, but they are really adorable. You can see the video, after the jump.

Ever thought about upgrading to Windows 7, but all the way from Windows 1.0? You may be asking, what? Well, a Youtube user has had some spare time (and by the time it took him to upgrade, a lot) to take this challenge and upgrade from Windows 1.0 to 7 – with every single OS in between, with the exception of one.

But it’s not that hard to guess. Anyway, the video will surprise you on how many programs and settings would remain with over twenty years worth of OS updates. Trust me, you will be surprised by how many will still work in Windows 7 that have been installed on Windows 1.0.

If you have a spare ten minutes or so, go watch now, after the jump.

Why is it bad? Despite the fact it is a very bad ad, it reveals some certain aspects of what advertising companies could use in 2021 – as the video says. Advertising companies could use data from people to interact with brands, even sell the data to data-mining companies more often to “interact” with brands. As well, the video shows that users could even get money from selling their own data.

You can see the horrific or prophetic ad at the bottom.

Meanwhile, the group Anonymous have threatened denial-of-service attacks on the Egyptian government over its censorship.

While Twitter has confirmed that its site has been blocked, other sites have been periodically blocked as Australia slept. The Next Web is claiming that YouTube, Facebook and Google are now accessible, but their connections slowed down – possibly in an effort to stop or slow-down protesters from uploading content to the West.

The Guardian is also reporting that mobile towers have been disabled and the telephone service cut, after protests were organised via text messages.

The pro-democracy movements in the Arab World have been using social media websites as a way to reach out during the protests – the most famous ones in Tunisia earlier in the year and in Iran over the disputed elections in 2009.

Anonymous, famous for their support of Wikileaks and also attacking the Australian Government over its proposed filter, has also threatened to send is currently sending denial-of-service attacks on websites on the Egyptian government over its censorship of the internet

“To the Egyptian Government: Anonymous challenges all those who are involved in censorship. Anonymous wants you to offer free access to uncensored media in your entire country. When you ignore this message, not only will we attack your government websites, Anonymous will make sure that the international media sees the horrid reality you impose on your people,” It wrote on a press release.

The web vigilante group has started “recruiting” people to conduct these attacks. Sites targeted, according to the International Business Times, include the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Communications and Technology. It appears that the sites mentioned have been taken down.

Also in the news, a Guardian journalist was arrested and beaten up. The full audio clip has been posted by The Guardian, and we do warn it contains some harsh language.

And now, we have seen some of the results of their mods – one of them happens to be Angry Birds.

Using some software – called the KinEmote, which allows your gestures to be recognised as mouse movements and clicks – a person has been able to control Angry Birds on the big screen with his Kinect camera. While the cursor allows him to move the cursor, he is holding a wireless controller to allow him to click – though, as noted on a blog post, you can even use a wireless mouse or Powerpoint clicker.

The video demo is below, after the jump.

Universal and Sony Music, the big two recording labels in the entire music business world, are working together in the UK on a new way to combat music piracy with “Instant Pop” – and it doesn’t sound bad at all (and that’s a big stretch).

The plan revolves around releasing its songs that debuts on radio stations on iTunes and other digital distribution outlets – a “on air, on sale” policy – allowing fans of the track to download the song right now, rather wait for six weeks before it is out on the same outlets.

“Wait is not a word in the vocabulary of the current generation. It’s out of date to think that you can build up demand for a song by playing it for several weeks on radio in advance,” Chief Executive of Universal Music, David Joseph, told the Guardian newspaper.

“What we were finding under the old system was the searches for songs on Google or iTunes were peaking two weeks before they actually became available to buy, meaning that the public was bored of – or had already pirated – new singles.”

The change is in response to the success of the X Factor in the UK, where the winner’s single – which has been released immediately – has sky-rocketed to the charts. As well, it is also a response to people recording the song from the radio – a very old technique – and posting it online, allowing people to download the song (via downloading the YouTube video).

No word when this new policy will extend to the other markets both Universal and Sony compete.

It was set to unlisted, meaning that the video could only be accessed if you had the URL. So the URL, of course, was leaked this morning.

When Google spotted the leak, they set the video to Private. But some nice people have reuploaded it for the world to see.

The video says that the new OS is ‘Entirely For Tablets’, so we’re guessing its entirely for tablets. And it does look quite lovely. Video is below:

Fujifilm has decided to welcome the first year of the new decade with a huge onslaught of cameras, as it plans to launch eleven new cameras – not including the ones previously covered – at this year’s CES – all having one thing in common: affordability (except for the last one).

Here’s the camera lineup for Fujifilm:

FinePix AV200, AX 300 and JV200
The cameras have been designed to be affordable for entry-level photographers, but yet include high resolution sensors and record 720p HD video. All have a 14-megapixel lens, but the AV200 and JV200 feature a 3x optical zoom, while the AX300 have a 5x optical zoom. The AV200 and AX300 run on AA batteries, while the JV200 runs on Li-ion batteries, and each will have a variety of features.

All will be out in stores next month, with the AV200 having a price tag of $89.95, the AX300 having a price tag of $99.95, and the JV200 selling at $109.95.

XP20 and XP30
The XP30 is Fujifilm’s first rugged digital camera with geo-tagging support, while the XP20 is similar to the XP30 without the geo-tagging features. Both are waterproof to five metres, shockproof to 1.5 metres, dustproof and can withstand cold temperatures up to -10°C. They will also have a 14-megapixel lens with a 2.7-inch screen at the back, and will allow easy uploading to Facebook and YouTube. Again, it can record 720p video.

The XP20 will be out in March for $199.95, while the XP30 will be out in the middle of next month for $239.95.

FinePix T200 and T300
The latest additions to the T-Series line, the T200 and T300 are slim cameras and feature a 14-megapixel lens with 10x zoom and are only 18.5mm thin. The T200 features a 2.7-inch LCD screen, while the T300 has a 3-inch LCD screen. Again, they can record 720p HD video, while also having Dual Image Stabilisation to combat shaking, facial recognition and smile detection, which will only let the camera take a photo if all are smiling.

The T200 will be out in March for $179.95, while the T300 will be out in April for $199.95.

FinePix Z90
The Z90 is a brand new camera as part of the company’s Z-series. Featuring a 3-inch LCD screen, 14-megapixel lens with 5x optical zoom, it is very thin at 17.5mm. It will also include 720p HD video recording, in addition with automatic uploading to YouTube and Facebook. What is also unique is that you can also edit your movies with special effects. It also includes digital image stabilisation, red eye removal and facial detection, and a panoramic mode that will stitch up three images together.

It will be out in mid-January with a price tag of $169.95.

FinePix JX300 and JX350
The JX300 will feature a 14-megapixel lens with 5x optical zoom, while the JX350 will have a 16-megapixel lens with 5x optical zoom. Both will include 720p HD video recording, smile and blink detection (it will warn you if someone has blinked in the photo), easy uploading to Facebook and YouTube, facial detection, automatic red-eye removal and digital image stabilisation.

The JX300 will be out in mid-February with a price tag of $129.95, while the JX350 will be out later in April at $159.95.

FinePix HS20EXR
Touted as a “high quality, advanced function SLR-styled long-zoom camera”, this has been built for a professional or enthusiast photographer – but with the ease for someone who has no idea how to use this type of camera before. With a 16-megapixel lens with a 30x manual optical zoom and a 3-inch LCD screen, it can capture a 360-degree panorama and will be able to record video in full 1080p HD quality. It will also have an option to capture images in RAW, JPEG or both. It also comes with standard features such as facial recognition and red-eye removal.

The FinePix HS20EXR will be out in March with a price tag of $499.95.

Samsung has announced a brand new camera that has Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to easily upload snapshots of precious memories to social networking sites and allow other devices, such as the Galaxy S smartphone, to view the photos.

The SH100 has a 14.2-megapixel lens, and will upload your memories to Facebook, Picasa or Photobucket, or even email the photos as attachments. It will also be able to upload HD video to YouTube, allowing quick sharing of memories rather than plugging it into your computer and uploading it then.

Other features include DLNA support, allowing you to connect your camera to your HDTV and view photos and videos instantly, and has 5x zoom. It also has a GPS chip so it will be able to tag your photos with your geographical location of the photo, and features a 3-inch LCD screen in the back.

It will come out in March this year in the United States, and will cost at $199.99. Gallery and press release are after the jump.

Samsung’s New SH100 Brings Your World Closer

New Wi-Fi enabled camera delivers ultimate connectivity on the move

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced today the launch of the new SH100, a compact Wi-Fi enabled camera that delivers great shots that you can share over the internet and social networks with your friends and family, from wherever you are in the world. The SH100 is set to be Samsung’s leading fully connected camera in 2011, building on the success of the company’s wirelessly connected cameras to date and allowing Samsung to take a dominant position within this growing market.

“At Samsung, we are always striving to innovate and you can see this in every product we release”

Samsung’s pioneering steps within the connected camera market can be seen in the SH100’s unique innovation, which allows you to connect wirelessly to your other devices with ease. You can use Wi-Fi to connect to your Android® powered Galaxy S™ smartphone, so you can view the shot you’re about to take in real time on your phone. If you’re not happy with it, you can zoom in and out to get the best picture, and then activate the shutter remotely when you’re ready to pose. This innovation means that the days of running between your camera and your subject, trying to line up the perfect group shot, are over. Users now have total control of their camera in the palm of their hand, from wherever they are in the shot. Users can even use their phone’s GPS to record exactly where they were when they captured their favorite memories.

The SH100’s built in Wi-Fi can also automatically back up your shots to your PC by only pushing two buttons, or by using DLNA to wirelessly connect to your HDTV and see your photos and videos right away. Wi-Fi enables you to upload your pictures instantly to your social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa or Photo Bucket, or email them to individual email addresses straight from the camera. The people you care about can now enjoy your experience from wherever they are. You can also record HD video and share your favorite moments over sites such as YouTube™. To make the upload process of large files easier and quicker, the SH100 includes an account with mobile hotspot provider Boingo™, giving you access to over 200,000 Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.

The SH100 is the latest example of Samsung’s user-focused innovation and design. The company has always carefully researched its target audience, and in 2011, Samsung is applying this research to create unique products for a younger, more digitally connected generation of camera users. The company is also leveraging its strength in other product areas, such as mobile phones, to make emerging camera technologies, such as Wi-Fi, accessible to all camera buyers, even those on smaller budgets.

“At Samsung, we are always striving to innovate and you can see this in every product we release,” said Mr. Hyunho Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics. “From our in-depth consumer research, we know that younger users have different needs from their digital camera. They don’t want to wait until they get home to share their favorite moments with their friends, they want to be able to do this instantly from wherever they are. The SH100 gives young people the chance to bring their world closer, by drawing on Samsung’s technological strength to deliver total connectivity in a compact camera, at an accessible price. Through the SH100, we hope to provide the best product for people looking for ultimate connectivity from their camera, and strengthen Samsung’s leadership in the compact camera category.”

Experience the Convenience

The SH100 uses built in Wi-Fi capability to deliver unique new experiences for all camera users. By selecting the PC Auto Back-up function, your camera will automatically find your PC and download the latest photos onto it, even if the PC is turned off. This feature is compatible with the Wake-on-LAN (WoL) system which many modern home PCs are already equipped with.

Innovation in Control Helps you Capture the Moment

The Wi-Fi capability on the SH100 also allows you to use your smartphone as a remote control and viewing device for your camera. If you’re shooting over a crowd at a concert, you can enable the Remote Viewfinder function, meaning that you can hold your camera high over your head while you see a preview of the picture in real time on your phone screen. It’s also ideal for taking self shots as you can zoom in and out using the 5x optical zoom, and access basic menu functions including parameters and shooting modes. When you’re happy with the shot, you can operate the shutter remotely too, and the camera will record the GPS information for photo geo-tagging.

Seamlessly Simple

Samsung has also used its strength in the smartphone market to develop a new Smart Access user interface (UI) for all of its new compact cameras. The touch based UI works in the same quick, intuitive way as many smartphones. Advanced functions, such as sharing content wirelessly, can be done simply by a few touches of the buttons on the large, clear 3” LCD screen. The Smart Access UI enables users to drag, click and control ‘app-style’ icons, easily flip through photos, and control a range of the camera’s features.

The Heart of your Digital Home

The SH100 features Samsung AllShare, which uses DLNA technology to allow you to connect to your HDTV and stream content wirelessly. For instance, when you get home from a concert, you can now watch the videos of your favorite songs instantly on your TV.

Design and Hardware

The BlackBerry Torch features a combination of a slider phone and a touchscreen phone, giving you the option to use either a keyboard or your fingers to navigate and send messages – and it does well in blending the two forms of phones together. The touchscreen is actually responsive, unlike its previous try with the Storm, and the keyboard is pretty comfortable to use, despite the fact it has been trimmed compared to previous BlackBerries. The trackpad also is inherited into the new design, allowing you to swipe up and down easily without actually pressing any physical keys.

The phone also features a 3.2-inch screen, using a capactive touchscreen, and while the colours are vibrant and it is easy to read from the screen, it has a lower resolution when compared to other smartphones, and it is very noticeable difference. However, the lower resolution isn’t a big deal as readability should not be demoted – especially when it will be used for the corporate environment.

While it is slim and thin, it doesn’t have that “sexy” look that phone makers try and put into their phones – granted, it is a phone designed for enterprise and corporate users, so the design is appropriate. However, it does have some weird placements for the headphone jack and the USB port to recharge the phone, as both are on the sides rather than at the top and/or bottom, making it feel akward to hold.

As well, another negative is that the microSD card slot is behind the battery, which makes hot-swapping the cards not possible, when many of the other phones have that same luxury. However, it was most likely done to keep the phone as thin as possible – but in my book, not a good reason to remove such a thing.

BlackBerry OS 6

One of the new things about this phone is that this is running the new version of the BlackBerry OS – version 6. The interface gets a huge revamp, chucking away a windows interface for going to applications and instead opting for having the applications in one location, a-la the Android/iOS. It also offers automatic sorting when it comes to downloaded applications and recent applications, in addition to common applications.

Despite the fact that it does not have a 1GHz processor, the OS runs smoothly on its 650MHz processor – and it could be because it was designed to run on a lower processor. Touch interfaces are fast, with some (and very small) delay, and it is rather smooth to switch between and open applications. As well, expect this on future BlackBerries – touch screen or not, as it will still support the trackpad movements. The onscreen QWERTY keyboard is easy to type with, and is present in both landscape and portrait mode, and does not open to a brand new section to input characters, like Symbian does. However, if there was some criticism – notifications seems to be squashed in together and feel like it has been slapped on – but then again, I am a web designer.

One of the big improvements is that it now ditches its old web browser for a new, WebKit-based web browser – bringing it on par with other devices. The new browser, while it does have some lag, renders pages really well. It also features tabs (finally), smooth browsing to the page rather than the traditional pixel by pixel change, and multi-touch zooming a-la the iPhone. It is an improvement, but I wouldn’t say that the browser offers the best experience in the entire phone market.

Another thing that is new with the BlackBerry OS is its now integrated social networking options. Now included are the BlackBerry’s Facebook, Twitter and MySpace applications and they connect to this new application called “Social Feeds”, allowing you to keep track of your social life on your phone. It should be noted that the Social Feeds application is not a replacement – it just happens to be an aggregator offering basic features. You will still need the applications in order to use the other options. It is also a shame that other social networking sites aren’t included, such as FourSquare and Gowalla.

Multimedia and Camera

Multimedia has also gotten a much-needed redesign after the previous OS had a crappy multimedia interface, with a new cover flow effect in order to flick through the screen when listening to music, allowing quick access to other tracks in your library. The video player gets a much-needed screen resize button, allowing you watch it in full screen or in standard screen. In addition, it has a YouTube application and allows you to listen to podcasts.

The phone features a five-megapixel camera with 2x zoom, LED flash and even a brand new interface, and the quality of the pictures is alright. The camera does offer a lot of features, not typical to other BlackBerry phones, such as facial recognition and “scenic” modes – with presets designed to take the best pictures in different scenarios. However, the video camera is a bit disappointing as it records in VGA quality – rather than in HD video quality like other smartphones, though they were decent – though a bit fuzzy in certain circumstances.

Call Quality and Performance

The phone’s call quality is pretty decent, and the other side was able to hear us clearly. However, it should be noted that the phone we used is on Vodafone – and with the recent problems, would see a different experience as what we had and what other carriers used. (I also did experience some slowness in retrieving data, especially when getting applications – I eventually was forced to use my WiFi network).

Battery life is alright, with the phone lasting nearly two days with some use before needing a recharge, and between three to four days when we just left it there sucking in data from RSS feeds and the social networking sites we put in the phone.

Conclusions

The phone, while not overall a “sexy” phone, does a great job in pushing BlackBerry to a new path where mobile phones are getting thinner and also changing in order to help us push our social lives. While the BlackBerry OS 6 has some flaws, it is pretty smooth despite the hardware not in the same par as other smartphones, but if you are corporate user or own a small business – it is a decent phone to get your emails and keep up to date in the business world.

If you are a consumer, rather than a corporate user, it pretty much does the same things that Android can do, and probably an Android phone can do better. It still, however, has a long way to go in order to prevent Android and Apple taking more market share.

It’s nearing the end of the very first decade of the new millennium, and of course the year. And this is typically the time where the search engines release the top yearly trends that its visitors typed into their search boxes, collated in a pretty web page for us to examine the year that was. And of course, Google starts the list.

It should be noted that Google doesn’t rank its search results as the most popular, but the fastest rising – meaning that how quickly they have become the top of the workplace gossip.

So what did we search? For the world, Facebook and Twitter took tenth and eighth place respectively, while singer Katy Perry reached seventh place. Gamezer, Myxer, Friv and Nicki Minaj took out ninth, sixth, fifth and fourth place respectively. However, the top three were (in order from bottom to the top): Justin Bieber, the Apple iPad and the infamous ChatRoulette. Wow, thanks for bringing those memories back Google.

For the US, the results were a bit similar, with the iPad topping the results, followed by ChatRoulette than the iPhone 4. The US’ success in the World Cup saw the FIFA World Cup in South Africa taking fourth place, while Justin Bieber took fifth. Myxer, Facebook, Grooveshark, Glee and Mocospace also placed in the top ten.

Australia, however, has a different picture to paint. While ChatRoulette was also number one, number two was FormSpring and number three was ABC3 – the public broadcaster’s children’s channel. Australia also searched for the World Cup (4th place) and Tumblr (5th place), while Event Cinemas, Omegle and Ancestry.com.au were surprises. Wikileaks also appeared on the list, as well as Jetstar, as ninth and tenth place respectively.

However, for those who finds these a bit too wordy, Google has created a Year in Review video for their Zeitgeist, which we have attached below.

And of course, Google had to put their products in it.

The Facebook machine continues to power its way into internet exclusivity, and after brushing aside Google earlier in the year as generating the most market share of visits on the entire web, Facebook now accounts for almost 25% of page views in the United States alone.

The site itself accounts for 10% of all internet visits compared to Google’s 7% and YouTube’s (Also owned by Google) 3%. With half a billion active users worldwide, these figures displaying Facebook’s online dominance should come as no surprise given how it has now become a routine method for our daily socialising. With Facebook keen to not rest on their laurels and stay committed to evolving and expanding the way we interact with people and the online world, we can only expect this trend to continue into the future.

After striking deals with a number of Hollywood studios including Lionsgate, MGM and Sony Pictures and British company Blinkbox, YouTube is set to relaunch its movies section of the site to the UK.

According to UK newspaper The Guardian, the service is to offer 400 movie titles from these studios, and most likely to include classics and mainstream titles from a couple of years ago.

For the UK, it will also offer 165 films for free via Blinkbox via an advertising revenue sharing deal. For Blinkbox, making such content free is to help build brand awareness for the company, especially when it charges £1.99 for movie and TV shows rentals.

“The size and scope of YouTube’s audience is immense and this exciting tie-up allows us to reach film fans and potential users outside of our usual audience and helping us build on our already rapidly growing customer base,” chief executive for Blinkbox, Michael Comish, told The Guardian.

The move is most likely to be within the UK and the US, but not in Australia. Get those proxies ready!

Thought 1080p was big in terms of pixel size, well get ready to see something bigger. There is another resolution that is bigger than that, and that is called 4K. While 1080p has a video resolution size of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 4K has a video resolution size of 4096 x 3072 pixels.

As the YouTube guys explained in their blog, it is even bigger than IMAX films.

“We always want videos on YouTube to be available in the highest quality possible, as creators intend,” YouTube engineer Ramesh Sarukkai, said.

There are a couple of downsides. Ramesh explains that 4K cameras aren’t cheap so you are most likely not going to encounter such films until the price – whenever that happens – gets cheap. As well, it requires very fast internet speeds – so Australia, don’t expect to see any of this any time soon. (I’ve only seen a few seconds worth and it was all jittery for me).

However, if you want to see this, YouTube has offered a couple of films that utilise 4K, and you can see them on a special playlist. In order to activate this, just go to the option where it states “360p” and change it to the “Original” selection.

Get ready for some more iPhone 4 carnage – and if you don’t like seeing the iPhone 4 being destroyed, you should look away. Instead of meeting the blades of a blender, it faces the burning power of the microwave. Put in the microwave for 62 minutes and one second, and on full power, the iPhone does really make a nice crispy sound when microwaving. And yes, it does get destroyed – if not, why post it?

You should really not try this at home, or in anyone’s microwave – there’s a reason why people put these on YouTube. The video is after the jump.

World Cup fever. It’s everywhere. No seriously. Go down the street, a stroll in the park, the shopping mall, ANYWHERE, and you will find some form of World Wup support. Now Google has boarded the train by adding a little soccer ball on every YouTube video (well not every, only the ones that use Google’s new YouTube scrubber) that audio-overlays the vuvuzela sound heard during World Cup broadcasts. While annoying to some, it is quite amusing to observe such videos with the South-African-World-Cup-unique-sound harping over the top of video.
