Nokia, the largest maker of phones in the entire world, has decided to sue Asian LCD panel makers – including LG, Sharp, Hitachi and Samsung – after alleging that all the parties colluded with each other to fix prices for their LCD displays, which are used almost anywhere today – including phones. Turns out, this is pretty common, with several LCD makers pleaded guilty in price fixing late last year in the US and were fined.

Samsung releases new OS named Bada
Ignoring the fact that the world has other alternatives like the BlackBerry OS, Apple iPhone OS, Google Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian OS, Palm WebOS and even Linux; Samsung has announced today that it will be launching its own mobile operating system for its phones. The name apparently means ocean in Korean, and will be open to a variety of platforms. The SDK won’t be released until a London launch event; and phones are expected to come out within Q2 of 2010.
Samsung, Qualcomm to renew mobile license deal
Samsung has announced that it will renew its contract with Qualcomm, extending the current contract to fifteen years, that will give the South Korean mobile maker access to the company’s US patents for 3G and the new 4G (fourth generation) technology.
Toshiba, Samsung, Sony and Nokia align on new Mobile High-Definition Link
Toshiba has announced that it will partner up with Nokia, Samsung, Sony and Silicon Image to form a new working group for a new standard. Called the Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group, it is supposed to be a new connector that will connect mobile phones or portable media devices to a high-definition television or display. The new technology will be based on Silicon Image’s Mobile High-Definition Link (or MHL).

Samsung announces restructure – consolidates operations in two divisions
Samsung Electronics has said that it will plan a restructure that would consolidate several of its business operations into two divisions, because of the slowing global economy. The new restructuring plan was announced during a personnel announcement at the company, and the broader Samsung Group.
Samsung to bring out 22-inch monitor, compatible with NVIDIA 3D Vision

CES 2009 : And you thought ViewSonic was the only one? Samsung has added the 2233RZ, it’s first 3D monitor, to its monitor lineup, and similar to the ViewSonic, it will be compatible with the new GeForce 3D Vision from NVIDIA. It will also have the same frame rate, at 120Hz, as the ViewSonic’s one.
Samsung’s new touchscreen MP3 player – the P3 8GB
CES 2009 : Samsung has brought out a new 3-inch WQVGA TFT-LCD touchscreen “multimedia player”, dubbed the Samsung P3; which features its “EmoTrue” touch interface with true haptic feedback. It also has the new sound enhancement technology called the DNS 3.0, and a 16:9 aspect ratio screen so it doesn’t letterbox.
Samsung Blu-Ray players come with Netflix streaming
Samsung is now offering a brand new update to its Blu-Ray players to let them stream Netflix movies to their players, and allow you to fast forward, rewind, browse and rate movies to watch instantly from your queue of movies. The fist players to support this is the BD-P2500 and the BD-P2550, with more coming soon.
Weak markets forces Samsung to drop hostile bid for SanDisk
Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker, has withdrew a $5.9 billion, or a $26/share, unsolicited bid to buy SanDisk; citing that SanDisk’s losses may worsen during time and failing to make any “meaning progress” over six month after SanDisk rejected its first bid.
Ex-Samsung boss fined $109 million for tax evasion, gets out of jail term
The ex-chairman and the son of the founder of South Korean-based company Samsung, Lee Kun-hee has been found guilty of tax evasion by the Seoul Central District Court; however, he will not serve three years at prison after the court handed down a suspended sentence.
Samsung 16Gb NAND Flash Memory
Samsung’s 51nm NAND flash chips can be produced 60 percent more efficiently than those produced with 60nm process technology. Samsung achieved this new migration milestone just eight months after announcing production of its 60nm 8Gb NAND flash last August. The new 16Gb chip which has a multi-level cell (MLC) structure can facilitate capacity expansion by offering 16 gigabytes (GBs) of memory in a single memory card. Furthermore, by applying the new process technology, Samsung has accelerated the chip’s read and write speeds by approximately 80 percent over current MLC data processing speeds.
