Virgin Mobile scores the iPhone

Optus-owned Virgin Mobile has become the fourth Australian mobile carrier to get its hands on the iPhone. It will sell the handheld device on August 1.

According the staff at Virgin, you can get the 8GB version for $0 upfront if they sign a 24-month contract for $70 per month, which gives them $520 worth of calls and text and 1GB of data capacity – and you can upgrade it to 2GB for an additional $15 per month ($85 in total).

Optus shows off Bold plans

It has been confirmed the Optus, Vodafone and Telstra will sell the Blackberry Bold, but only Optus and Telstra have confirmed plans.

The Optus plans will have the phone at the earliest on August 20 for $10 a month over a 24 month contract under its Blackberry $79 cap plan.

Optus to introduce ‘unlimited’ mobile pricing plans

Optus has revealed today that they will be launching brand new unlimited mobile pricing plans, that will include unlimited calls (including video calls) and SMS/MMS, plus large data usage allowances.

Dubbed the ‘yes’ Timeless plans, they will also be available for iPhone purchasers too – but without the MMS, Push to Talk or video calling since the iPhone has not supported it (which I think its crap for not supporting it – I’m still thinking of getting one though).

Major outage in QLD, Northern NSW

Whirlpool is reporting that Optus is experiencing a major outage in Queensland and in Northern New South Wales because of simulatneous network failures.

According to them, a fibre link between the two states were damaged at the same time when its hardware failed. It affects all services, including internet access, mobile and landlines. This is also affecting all other ISPs who rely on the link.

Optus reveals truth about its network hang-ups

After 16 years of competition on the telecommunications industry, Optus has said in a submission to the government on the regulation of the fibre-optic broadband network.

It has said that "16 years after deregulation, Telstra continues to dominate the fixed-line sector and the current regulatory framework has proved to be incapable of effectively regulating". Telstra currently resells the network to all telecommunication rivals, since it was partly owned by the government.

Optus has revealed their pricing, following Telstra’s announcement of the pricing of the popular phone. The carrier is offering a couple of plans, but all are under a 24 month contract.

Optus pushing for tender extension or boycott

Chief Executive for Optus Paul O’Sullivan has said that the Federal Government offer a five-month extension for all bidders for the new national broadband contract or will face a boycott.

The $4.7 billion national broadband contract would see those bidding creating a new high-speed network that will reach 98 percent of Australia’s population. The price is expected to be twice that amount, with the government pouring in $4.7 billion into the plan.

15 cents for just an extra 2GB? Hell no!

Optus has this weird thing on your internet where you have to pay an extra 15c for every MB, with a maximum of 2GB. This is absurd, and outrageous.

It’s just another money-making scheme, where we are in a middle of paying higher interest rates and many of us losing our homes or have to cut back spending. These, however, are making additional hell. And I’m facing it.
