However, it might need to do some more to increase its market share after it dipped from 52.4 percent in 2008 to 46.9 percent in 2009, despite an increase of units sold.
A bug in the Android OS version 2.0.1 can allow unauthorised access to your phone, bypassing the locking mechanism on the Motorola Droid (or Milestone in Europe and Australia), with a simple phone call to the device.
RUMOUR MILL: Got to love the rumours before CES 2010. Motorola may be planning to bring out two new phones during the conference, according to one analyst from Global Equities Research. Both phones are said to be running Android, with one having an OLED screen and a physical keyboard, and that will be heading over to AT&T. The other phone will also have an OLED screen, but have a soft keyboard and will go to Verizon – following on the success of its Droid phone.
With Motorola eliminating 4,000 jobs after posting a loss in the fourth quarter of 2008, as holiday sales plummet more than 50 percent from a year earlier, there might be signs that Motorola may be shifting away from using Windows Mobile as the OS for many of its smartphones, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Motorola has said that it will be laying off 4,000 workers in 2009, with most of the cuts (3,000) coming from the failing mobile phone division. These are expected to begin immediately, and come on top of the 3,000 job reduction that was announced during Q4 2008.
Motorola has brought out a new touchscreen phone, being described as a “new, intuitive, customizable and vibrant touch tablet” with 3G support. Called the MOTOSURF A3100, its home page is just a restyled front-page being overlaid on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
CES 2009 : Motorola has announced three brand new phones that it will sell in 2009; including one that has its casing made out of recycled plastic water bottles (The other two phones will be posted soon).
Standards & Poor (S&P) have lowered Motorola’s long-term credit rating to junk status, making it one level below investment grade, as the company continues to decline. As well, Moody’s Investors Service is also considering downgrading the company’s debt rating to two levels above non-investment grade.
