Nokia brings out first Linux smartphone – Nokia N900

Despite a few leaks, Nokia has announced it will be releasing its very first smartphone that will be Linux-based (using its Maemo 5 software), and not its Symbian operating system.

Coming out in October, the Nokia N900 is set to operate more like a computer and not a phone; with the Finnish company touting that the phone is, according to Executive Vice President, Anssi Vanjoki, “something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone.” It will also set back consumers €500, excluding any taxes and subsidiaries.

3 mobile changes iPhone pricing

Just the day before the iPhone is set to launch on 3’s mobile network, thanks to its merger with Vodafone’s Australian operations, it has announced a change in its plans that will see the iPhone 3G 8GB model be sold with no additional payments.

3 releases iPhone pricing

Nearly one month after the iPhone 3GS was launched on Optus, Vodafone and Telstra; 3 has announced that the pricing of the iPhone on their network, three days before it is set to go out on sale on July 17; and in line with its youth-focus brand, those will have to pay less to get a free iPhone 3GS 16GB than Optus (See Correction).

Palm Pre dissected

As launch day for the Palm Pre finally wraps up, a website has decided to dissect its guts to find out what is inside the phone which is closest to being an iPhone competitor. According to CNET’s Crave blog, all the parts cost around US$170 – which is $20 lower than what they are selling it for, $199 with a $100 mail-in rebate and a two year contract.

North Korea to get internet access on phones

North Korea will be finally stepping into the 21st century after it was reported (by a government website) that internet access via their mobile phones will be turned on, allowing users to have access to news reports by the Korean Central News Agency and news about Pyongyang, the capital of the country.
