Just weeks after announcing OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has revealed OS X Nyan. While this new version has the same features as the yet-to-be-released upgrade of Mountain Lion, Nyan sports a brand new look, with Nyan cat wallpaper and soon a fully reskinned OS X experience. While the design isn’t finished, Apple has released a version with the new features and a wallpaper which may or may not be changed in final release.

The new version will continue to merge Apple’s apps and features from the iPad/iPhone to your Mac, such as Messages, Notes, Reminders, Game Center, Notification Center, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring. More features include a rainbow dock, rainbow top-bar, and rainbow themes for iLife, iWork and other software, such as iTunes. It’s insane, but also a reminder that Apple’s design is foward-thinking.

Tim Cook told The Verge that criticism for the new version of OS X is “just unfair” and that it will “not be changing anything.”

He also stated that “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye”

The beta will be available via the Mac Developer Program from today, while it has a set release date for Summer 2012. It’s exciting to see that Apple can do no wrong. We love it. 5/5 Will buy again.

The full press release can be found below:

Apple Releases OS X Nyan Developer Preview with Over 100 New Features

CUPERTINO, California—April 1, 2012—Apple® today released a developer preview of OS X® Nyan, the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced operating system, which brings popular apps and features from iPad® to the Mac® and accelerates the pace of OS X innovation. Nyan introduces Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Center to the Mac, as well as Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay® Mirroring. Nyan is the first OS X release built with iCloud® in mind for easy setup and integration with apps. The developer preview of Nyan also introduces Gatekeeper, a revolutionary security feature that helps keep you safe from malicious software by giving you complete control over what apps are installed on your Mac. The preview release of Nyan is available to Mac Developer Program members starting today. Mac users will be able to upgrade to Nyan from the Mac App Store™ in late summer 2012.

“The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Nyan things get even better,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The developer preview of Nyan comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world’s most advanced personal computer operating system.”

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”

The developer preview of Nyan features the all new Messages app which replaces iChat® and allows you to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from your Mac to another Mac or iOS device. Messages will continue to support AIM, Jabber, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. Starting today Lion users can download a beta of Messages from www.apple.com, and the final version will be available with Nyan. Reminders and Notes help you create and track your to-dos across all your devices. Game Center lets you personalize your Mac gaming experience, find new games and challenge friends to play live multiplayer games, whether they’re on a Mac, iPhone®, iPad or iPod touch®.

Nyan presents notifications in an elegant new way, and Notification Center provides easy access to alerts from Mail, Calendar, Messages, Reminders, system updates and third party apps. System-wide Share Sheets make it easy to share links, photos and videos directly from Apple and third party apps. Twitter is integrated throughout Nyan so you can sign on once and tweet directly from Safari®, Quick Look, Photo Booth®, Preview and third party apps. Nyan also introduces AirPlay Mirroring, an easy way to wirelessly send a secure 720p video stream of what’s on your Mac to an HDTV using Apple TV®.

More than 100 million users have iCloud accounts, and Nyan makes it easier than ever to set up iCloud and access documents across your devices. Nyan uses your Apple ID to automatically set up Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Messages, FaceTime® and Find My Mac. The new iCloud Documents pushes any changes to all your devices so documents are always up to date, and a new API helps developers make document-based apps work with iCloud.

Gatekeeper is a revolutionary new security feature that gives you control over which apps can be downloaded and installed on your Mac. You can choose to install apps from any source, just as you do on a Mac today, or you can use the safer default setting to install apps from the Mac App Store, along with apps from developers that have a unique Developer ID from Apple. For maximum security, you can set Gatekeeper to only allow apps from the Mac App Store to be downloaded and installed.

Nyan also has features specifically designed to support Chinese users, including significant enhancements to the Chinese input method and the option to select Baidu search in Safari. Nyan makes it easy to set up Contacts, Mail and Calendar with top email service providers QQ, 126 and 163. Chinese users can also upload video via Share Sheets directly to leading video websites Youku and Tudou, and system-wide support for Sina weibo makes microblogging easy.

Hundreds of new APIs give developers access to new core technologies and enhanced features within OS X. The Game Kit APIs tap into the same services as Game Center on iOS, making it possible to create multiplayer games that work across Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. A new graphics infrastructure underpins OpenGL and OpenCL and implements GLKit, first introduced in iOS 5, to make it easier to create OpenGL apps. Using Core Animation in Cocoa apps is easier than ever, and new video APIs deliver modern 64-bit replacements for low-level QuickTime APIs. Enhanced Multi-Touch™ APIs give developers double-tap zoom support and access to the system-wide lookup gesture. Kernel ASLR improves security through enhanced mitigation against buffer overflow attacks.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.

Major news has come out of Apple with the revelation of the latest version of Mac OS X 10.8, and the release of a developer preview for you Mac fanboys to play with. Dubbed “MOUNTAIN LION“, the new version will merge the apps and features from the iPad to your Mac.

Yes, that means Messages, Notes, Reminders, Game Center, Notification Center, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring are now heading to your Mac. Messages will replace iChat – but don’t fret, you’ll still be able to connect to Jabber, AIM, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger from it. You’ll also be able to send “unlimited messages” and high-quality media from Mac to another Mac or iOS device.

Notification Center is essentially bringing Growl to the core. Alerts from Mail, Calendar, Messages and from many other applications will now be presented there. Strengthening its security features is “Gatekeeper”, which lets you control which apps are downloaded and installed, and limit the source of Apps to the Mac App Store.

Chinese support has been improved with changes in how to input characters, and to select Baidu in Safari. Also included is easy integration with large Chinese service providers QQ, 126 and 163 (I really do want to know why Chinese sites insist of numbers rather than a word, must be a cultural thing). Chinese users will also be able to share stuff to Sina’s weibo – their Twitter equivalent – and video sites Youku and Tudou.

The beta will be available via the Mac Developer Program from today, while it has a set release date for Summer 2012.

Apple has finally pulled the delta update for Mac OS X 10.7.3, a release that was supposed to fix bugs and other problems but instead caused major problems to some users, such as the CUI errors and other application issues. Instead of downloading the smaller delta update, users are now made to download the combined update, meaning a bigger download of 1.34GB, almost double the original update’s size of 730.6MB

While the issues weren’t happening to everyone, a large number of users had OS-breaking problems, including myself. If you don’t want to risk anything, you should always wait a week after an update until the all-clear is given. And while this update is probably safe, you might want to wait if you’ve got important work to do.

Apple is introducing a new pricing scheme for the Australian App Store so that it matches our strong Aussie Dollar. Apps will now come as $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, $4.49, $5.49, $6.49, $7.49, $8.49, $9.49, $10.49 and so on. Here is a small comparison:

<colgroup>
<col width="84" />
<col width="106" /></colgroup>

Before

Now

1.19

0.99

2.49

1.99

3.99

2.99

4.99

4.49

5.99

5.49

This is nothing but good news for Australian’s, even if we’re still paying a little extra for some Apps.

For US$24.99 a year iTunes Match will scan your ripped (or pirated) music and match it with 256kbps DRM-free AAC songs from iTunes servers.

“We have 18m songs in the music store. Our software will scan what you have, the stuff you’ve ripped, and figure out if there’s a match. If you have to upload your whole library, that could take weeks. If we’re scanning and matching, we don’t have to upload them. They’re in the cloud.”

Sadly you have to use iTunes to listen to “cloud” music instead of a much easier web interface, which is a shame.

And the fact that Apple just tried to diss Google and Amazon for using a web application instead of a native one is sad.

Press Release:

SYDNEY Australia— 7 June 2011—Apple® today announced that Mac OS® X Lion, the eighth major release of the world’s most advanced operating system with more than 250 new features and 3,000 new developer APIs, will be available to customers in July as a download from the Mac® App Store™ for AUD$31.99 inc GST. Some of the amazing features in Lion include: new Multi-Touch® gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; the Mac App Store, the best place to find and explore great software, built right into the OS; Launchpad, a new home for all your apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

“The Mac has outpaced the PC industry every quarter for five years running and with OS X Lion we plan to keep extending our lead,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The best version of OS X yet, Lion is packed with innovative features such as new Multi-Touch gestures, system-wide support for full screen apps, and Mission Control for instantly accessing everything running on your Mac.”

New Multi-Touch gestures and fluid animations built into Lion let you interact directly with content on the screen for a more intuitive way to use your Mac. New gestures include momentum scrolling, tapping or pinching your fingers to zoom in on a web page or image, and swiping left or right to turn a page or switch between full screen apps. All Mac notebooks ship with Multi-Touch trackpads and desktop Macs can use Apple’s Magic Trackpad.

Full screen apps take advantage of the entire display and are perfect for reading email, surfing the web or browsing photos, especially on a MacBook Air® or MacBook® Pro. With a single click your app fills the display and you can swipe from one window to another, between full screen apps, or back to your Desktop, Dashboard or Spaces® without ever leaving full screen. iWork® and iLife® apps, as well as Safari®, iTunes®, Mail, FaceTime® and others, all take advantage of Lion’s system-wide support for full screen apps.

Mission Control combines Exposé®, full screen apps, Dashboard and Spaces into one unified experience for a bird’s eye view of every app and window running on your Mac. With a simple swipe, your desktop zooms out to display your open windows grouped by app, thumbnails of your full screen apps and your Dashboard, and allows you to instantly navigate anywhere with a tap.

The Mac App Store is built into Lion and is the best place to discover great new Mac apps, buy them with your iTunes account, download and install them. Apps automatically install directly to Launchpad, and with Lion’s release, the Mac App Store will be able to deliver smaller “delta” app updates and new apps that can take advantage of features like In-App Purchase and Push Notifications.

Launchpad makes it easier than ever to find and launch any app. With a single Multi-Touch gesture, all your Mac apps are displayed in a stunning full screen layout. You can organise apps in any order or into folders and swipe through unlimited pages of apps to find the one you want.

Lion includes a completely redesigned Mail app with an elegant widescreen layout. The new Conversations feature groups related messages into an easily scrollable timeline, intelligently hiding repeated text so the conversation is easy to follow, and retaining graphics and attachments as they were originally sent. An incredibly powerful new search feature allows you to refine your search and suggests matches by person, subject and label as you type. Mail includes built-in support for Microsoft Exchange 2010.

Additional new features in Lion include:

• Resume, which conveniently brings your apps back exactly how you left them when you restart your Mac or quit and relaunch an app;
• Auto Save, which automatically and continuously saves your documents as you work;
• Versions, which automatically records the history of your document as you create it, and gives you an easy way to browse, revert and even copy and paste from previous versions; and
• AirDrop, which finds nearby Macs and automatically sets up a peer-to-peer wireless connection to make transferring files quick and easy.

Pricing & Availability
Mac OS X Lion will be available in July as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard® from the Mac App Store for AUD$31.99 inc GST. Lion will be the easiest OS X upgrade and at about 4GB, it is the size of an HD movie from the iTunes Store®. Mac OS X Lion Server requires Lion and will be available in July from the Mac App Store for AUD$51.99 inc GST.

Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM. The Lion upgrade can be installed on all your authorised personal Macs.

The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorised Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

Apple has today released a big new update to their MacBook Pro lineup. The new laptops have “next generation” processors and graphics cards, a FaceTime HD camera (or as we like to call it, a good webcam) and Thunderbolt I/O technology, developed by Intel and Apple.

The Thunderbolt I/O features two bi-directional channels, each with transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. For the not- so technological kinds, like me, Intel says that this means a 10-20GB movie will take less than 30 seconds to transfer. The new I/O technology gives PCI Express access straight to high speed peripherals, like USB, FireWire, RAID arrays and also high resolution display technologies such as DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI and VGA.

Intel expect that the technology will be widely adopted across many laptops.

The 13-inch Pro starts at $1399, contains an Intel Core i5 and i7 dual-core processor of up to 2.7GHz and Intel HD Graphics 3000.

The 15-inch and 17-inch models have a quad-core Core i7 processor with up to 2.3 GHz and up to 1GB of video memory with the AMD Radeon HD graphics processor.

All are available right now at Apple Stores, so if you’ve waited all week for the new model you can snap it up. Oh, and make sure non-Apple shops don’t sell you an old model.

The store will be similar to the iOS App Store where you can find free and paid applications in similar categories, and will also feature one-click installation of applications.

For developers, 70 percent of the revenue goes to you and no payment is necessary for hosting, marketing or credit card fees – with pricing is up to the developer. However, applications are set to be vetted by Apple to be on the App Store, but unlike the iOS App Store, if an application has not been added to the App Store, then it can be found on alternative locations – such as the internet.

The Mac App Store is to be an additional download via Softeware Update for those using Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), and will be included in the next version of Mac OS X, 10.7 Lion.

Digitimes claims that Apple is expected to launch at least four new upgraded MacBook Pros that include a slight change in the chassis and upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion; while the new iMac is said to feature a new panel size and a new price point in order to attract “the mainstream market”.

Other than that, details are sparse. However, expect an Apple event in January – using the ever predictable calendar – that could see a major refresh in its non-iPhone and non-iPod lineup.

Apple has just announced the next version of Mac OS X in Cupertino, titled ‘Lion’. The new version features revolve around Apple wanting to make Mac more like iPad. Apple has said that it should be coming in the Summer of 2011 (US).

A few of the highlights include an App Store, where you can ‘discover’ and buy Apps. Developers have a 70/30 share of revenue with Apple. Also the App Store has One-click downloads, Free & Paid apps, Automatic installation, Automatic app updates and the apps you buy can be used on all of your Macs. The Mac App Store is a standalone app and will be coming in 90 days to ‘your Mac’.

Also announced was Launchpad. This is similar to the iPad’s homescreen, so Apps you download from the App Store go to the Launchpad. You just click the Launchpad icon on the dock and a the homescreen will fade in. You can also arrange apps into folders, iOS 4 style.

There is also Full Screen support for these apps, which Apple says removes distractions and makes your Apps a more immersive experience.

And finally, they have made a FaceTime app for Mac, meaning iPod touch and iPhone 4 users can not only call each other, but their Mac-using friends. No word on a Windows port yet.

But these are just some highlights, so expect more news soon.

Apple has just sent this invite out to the media which invites them to see “what’s new for the Mac.” What could it be though? New hardware? New software? There’s a lion in the background, which could hint at Mac OS 10.7. The event will be held in Cupertino and will be discussing the next version of Mac OS X. And the last time Apple held a Mac event, Snow Leopard was previewed and launched a year later, according to Engadget.

New reports on Apple’s Support discussion boards are claiming that they are losing their data on their accounts if a user logs into the Mac’s Guest account – either accidentally or on purpose – and tries to log back into their regular account. Speculation is on the cause is on how Snow Leopard treats Guest accounts, which is set to delete all data when you log out from the account.

As well, this problem was being reported within days after Apple released Snow Leopard into the wild, with all of the discussions are still marked as “not answered”, and that the only way to getting all your data back is to restore it from a previous backup – so, if you got a Time Capsule, you better start backing up your data constantly.

If you haven’t been affected by the bug, you should disable your Guest account entirely, or at least disable it and then re-enable it so it’s a native Snow Leopard account, according to an article on MacFixIt.

Remember when Apple confirmed the much-hyped malware protection in Snow Leopard; well, it turns out that its nothing more than a XProtect.plist file that contains five file signatures for only two, and the most popular, trojans out there infecting Macs – OSX.RSPlug and OSX.Iservice.

Both threats, described as very low threats by Symantec, are usually attached as payloads on shady installs of the latest iWork and Adobe CS4 software found in Bit Torrent sites, installing themselves after a user enter their administrator credentials.
