Review : Wordpress iPhone App

The Wordpress App for the iPhone and the iPod touch is a brilliant application; however, it might not be a good way to blog if you are a serious blogger - like me. This application works for both Wordpress.com and your self-installation on your server, but you will need Wordpress 2.5.1 or higher to make this work.

Like Wordpress, this is a community driven app, where you can contribute. And just like any app, there are some flaws, like several plugins won’t work with this - or a host like GoDaddy could break it. Also, if your site has invalid UTF-8 encoding, that can also make this app useless, unless you have multiple blogs with Wordpress.

The good thing is that you can write, edit and delete posts from your iPhone or iPod touch. Also, you can upload photos from your iPhone, and iPod as well. If you have the iPod touch, you will need a Wi-Fi connection to sync it with your blog, but your iPhone would use the 3G or EDGE connection.

You will not be able to edit any settings, approve comments or add new links to your blogroll on your blog from the application, or edit your user information. While the fact that you can’t change your user information is good (for security purposes), the fact that you can’t approve comments or add new links is a feature I would like to see.

Like I said before, this is not good for a blogger who writes long reviews - but good for breaking news, if you have a Wi-Fi hotspot nearby, or your 3G/EDGE connection. But, it is great as well for people to start a post on Wordpress on your iPod, go to a nearby hotspot and upload it as a draft on your blog, then go home and finish it with a normal keyboard (which is what I’m doing right now).

But while I have a little grievence over it, it is a very good application. I highly recommend this application for those who use Wordpress.

Idiot buys US$999 iPhone app, tries to get his money back

vfeo5

I am still getting my head around why would someone would be so gullible to buy this application when the entire web was going haywire over it.

Lee5279xx was jokingly clicking on the Buy link, but apparently forgot that his wife had an application on his laptop and thus he bought the application for $999.99. He went to his bank to get his money bank, but now he’s in limbo because he now needs to negotiate with the developer - Armin Heinrich, or Apple. He even goes so far as saying it was a scam:

THIS IS NO JOKE…DO NOT BUY THIS APP AND APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THIS FROM THE APP STORE….APPLE MUST MUST MUST START TO SCREEN THESE FAKE APPS AND RIDICULOUS SCAMS.

No, it is not a scam, it’s just you being an idiot to buy the application in the first place.

Round 2: iPhone launches in 20 countries in August

After the iPhone was launched in July 11 in many countries - including New Zealand and Australia for the first time, Another 20 countries will receive the prized iPhone in 20 countries on August 22nd.

Spanish telecommunication carrier Telefonica will launch in eight countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay; and Reuters is reporting that America Mobil will bring the iPhone to several South American countries - most overlapping with Telefonica’s countries and in Paraguay and Honduras.

But that’s not all, Bharti Airtel will be bringing it in India with Vodafone; O2 is bringing it to the Czech Republic, TeliaSonera’s EMT will launch the phone in Estonia, Orange and Era will bring it to Poland; and Orange will roll it in Romania as well. The Philippines will also have the iPhone thanks to Globe Telecom, and Poland with T-Mobile.

But that brings the list to 16, but four more have yet to be confirmed. This now brings the list to 45.

ScreenShot165While Apple did say that they were checking all the apps that were going to be in the Apps Store, this has to be the most funny cock-up that Apple has done since the MobileMe launch.

This application, known as the I Am Rich application, is basically an application for the iPod Touch and iPhone that displays a red gem.

And that’s about it.

It’s all about how rich you are - and that is basically what the description of the application says

However, the most ridiculous thing about the application is the price - it costs US$999.99, or $1,199.99 for the application.

The good thing is that Apple will get 30% off all purchases - which is US$300 for those who were stupid enough to buy the application in the first place. So, while you go get your bank to loan you that much money for a picture of a red gem; we will be covering more technology news, while sipping at our coffees and writing on other people’s Facebook Wall - because that is much better than covering this app.

Virgin is out of iPhones - already…

Virgin Mobile has run out of iPhones, after announcing that it would be offering the phone on Friday. The website is saying that both the 8GB and 16GB offerings are "Out of Stock", with the white iPhone version only available for the 16GB - and is very limited.

A spokesperson for Virgin has confirmed that the iPhone stock had gone dry. It did not say how many that it had to begin with.

Virgin gives you 5GB on iPhone data plan - wow!

When we reported that 3’s unauthorized, make-you-buy-your-own-because-we-cannot-be-stuffed-talking-to-Apple iPhone plans gave you a maximum of 2GB of data on one of their plans; we thought that it would be the only one that is going over the 1GB limit - but we were wrong, as usual.

Virgin Mobile, which recently said that it has been allowed to sell the iPhone (it is owned by Optus), is now offering 5GB on a $100 cap plan - and allowing you no handset repayments on the 8GB and 16GB versions. Those who are looking for something cheaper, they are also offering a $70 cap plan with 1GB - and offering the iPhone for free on the 8GB, and a $4 fee per month on the 16GB version.

However, since its cheap broadband plans were introduced with its home phone deals, there have been heavy congestion on the network with speeds so slow that it has been unusable by some customers. As well, while 750Kb/s speed throttling has been applied, it will not be applied to those on the iPhone.

Calls are charged at 40c per 30 seconds, within Optus’ and Vodafone’s range - though they offer calls at 35c per 30 seconds.

logoThreeEven though Apple has left them in the dark, it did not stop Three to get its hands on the iPhone - by making you get it from another carrier. It tells you to buy a pre-paid version of the phone and pay the $80 to get it unlocked so it can work with their network.

This would set you back $809 for the 8GB, since it costs $729, and $949 for the 16GB version, since it costs $849 for it. The good news is that the 3 will pay you back $300 just for bringing the phone to them. After that, the plans get better over at 3.

While the $49 cap will allow you 1GB and $350 worth of Calls, SMS and "more", all the other plans will allow you to have 2GB of data. There is a 10c/MB charge if you go over that limit. All are under a 24 month contract.

There are some catches, however, like:

  • Your cap includes up to $100 of international calls, video calls, SMS, voicemail, 1300 and 1800 numbers and directory assistance.
  • You will need to pay $1.65 per MB if you roam on Telstra’s coverage area - since there are a lot of black spots in its coverage.
  • If you disconnect within the 24 months, you will need to pay $49 or $50 per remaining month, depending on your plan that you have on the remaining months.

Remember, these are not sanctioned by Apple; so its Three’s fault if your iPhone screws up - which is unlikely, but I just like warning people of false fears.

Virgin Mobile scores the iPhone

Optus-owned Virgin Mobile has become the fourth Australian mobile carrier to get its hands on the iPhone. It will sell the handheld device on August 1.

According the staff at Virgin, you can get the 8GB version for $0 upfront if they sign a 24-month contract for $70 per month, which gives them $520 worth of calls and text and 1GB of data capacity - and you can upgrade it to 2GB for an additional $15 per month ($85 in total).

The 2GB thing is a definite surprise, since no other carrier - including its parent, Optus - has not offered more than 1GB of data since the iPhone’s launch. While no plans have been revealed for the 16GB model, staff have said that it will be revealed on Friday.

Telstra reveals ‘Bold’ pricing

blackberryboldBlackberry fans can now rejoice after Telstra has lifted the curtain over its pricing and availability for the new, long-awaited Blackberry Bold smartphone.

It will offer it from late September, and will offer it for $0 upfront. It has not, however, revealed any specific plans or how much will it cost and the total data usage included.

Following on what Optus did with the iPhone, you will need to register your interest via Telstra Business site or calling 1800 BUSINESS.

Like the iPhone, Optus and Vodafone are slated to carry the phone; with 3 also rumoured to get the smartphone - but all have remained tight lipped.

Rumour Mill: iPhone gets fourth carrier in Australia?

Terence Huynh
28 July 2008, 18:32

Australia is most likely going to see another carrier coming on board the iPhone bandwagon, joining Optus, Telstra and Vodafone - and it is not 3.

Virgin Mobile is said to pick up the phone, and rumour has it it will be selling it in the next two weeks. While a spokesperson for the company has denied the rumours (saying that they had "nothing to announce at this time"). It is also more likely to happen since Virgin Mobile is actually owned by Optus.

While it is owned by one of the carriers that carry the iPhone, it really does not mean that it could bring the iPhone to Virgin. But it looks like Virgin is getting ahead of themselves, already having a promotion up and ready for the iPhone - its just that it is not on the site just yet.

You need to scavenge through the source code. Just in case they delete it, we will post it below (click on it to make it bigger!).
