Protect your brain with a… brain helmet?

By Terence Huynh on July 25th, 2010 1 Comment

Yes, what you are seeing is a brain, and while we left you pondering with a brain cupcake for zombies, turns out it will protect your noggin as well. Don’t worry, it is all fake. Yes, this is just an image of a brain that has been stuck on a motorcycle helmet. There are also other styles in the series, including the Black 8 ball, someone’s bald head, a bum, a breast with pierced nipple, a tennis ball and a cracked walnut.

Very stylish? Very weird? Well, if it isn’t, we’re out of a job. You can find the rest of the series of motorcycle helmets from a Kazakhstan website called Good! (We don’t think that this deserves a NSFW warning, but just in case – it is NSFW!)

New web filter blocks out every mention of religion

By Terence Huynh on July 16th, 2010 2 Comments

Hate when evangelicals push their religious views on you, or setting the damn agenda on an issue – looking at you, Australian Christian Lobby with your views on internet filtering? Well, get ready to have a God-free internet with a new filtering package called Godblock.

And it does what it does, it filters religious content. And like all other filters, it is just doing it for the children – protecting them from the “often violent, sexual, and psychologically harmful material in many holy texts, and from being indoctrinated into any religion before they are of the age to make such decisions.”

Dress like Master Chief – Steampunk style!

By Terence Huynh on June 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Guess what! Now you can dress like Master Chief like it was 1850. Remember that? The Victorian era? Oh wait, we weren’t born yet.

Done by an artist called Christophe, he created a steampunk version of the helmet wore by the spartans on Halo using only four layers of acrylic paint to give it a brushed metal feel and PVC piping to create the, lack for any other words, pipe.

For the uninitiated, steampunk is just an genre of fiction that is based on the Victorian era of Britain, using a lot of machinery. But why take my answer, when you can have Wikipedia’s answer instead.

Christophe is no stranger to this type of work. He has created a steampunk version of an Xbox 360 – which looks bloody brilliant – and a steampunk rose.

Doesn’t it look so god damn good? Bet you want to get your hands on it, do you? Well, it isn’t for sale, sadly. Shame. Though, you can just always stare at it.

If you want to see more images of the Halo helmet, then go to his profile on DeviantArt.

Can you decypher the time on this watch?

By Terence Huynh on June 20th, 2010 1 Comment

Believe it or not, this is actually a watch. No joke. Called the Zonal – and yes, I don’t even know what that means exactly – it is essentially a watch that depicts time in red segments of a squircle, or a rounded square. The top right one tells the hours, while the bottom left tells the time in increments of five. The bottom right tells the one minute increments of that five minutes.

It is a concept, however, so don’t expect this at Target any time soon. However, despite telling time in a complicated way, it does kinda look a bit cool – though, I’m a geek, what do I know about fashion?

IT Crowd comes back this week, first episode online now

By Terence Huynh on June 20th, 2010 No Comments

The Big Bang Theory? Pfft. This week sees the premiere of Series Four of The IT Crowd, one of my favourite comedies. However, while some prefer to wait on BitTorrent, or wait until the ABC acquires the rights to broadcast it, Channel 4 (the broadcaster in the UK) has put the entire first episode up on the web before its television premiere. Only problem: you must be in the UK. So fire up that proxy or VPN, get a disposable email address, and soon you’ll be watching that first episode.

However, if you prefer to wait, it airs on Friday June 25 – so make sure your favourite BitTorrent site is bookmarked. Right after the jump is a trailer.

‘The Social Network’ film now has a poster

By Terence Huynh on June 20th, 2010 1 Comment

Revealed yesterday, the film The Social Network (or the Facebook movie) revealed its official poster. The poster is just a face shot of Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, with the tag line “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies”. The movie, which recounts Zuckerberg’s founding of the popular social networking site, is based on The Accidential Billionaires by Ben Merzrich, and has been adapted by Aaron Sorkin – the guy who produced the West Wing.

But is it worthy of making a movie about it? Is there anything interesting from Zuckerberg’s life that would warrant a film? There might – especially the controversy between Zuckerberg and ConnectU, who claims that Zuckerberg stole their idea to make TheFacebook (the previous name). As well, with the recent privacy concerns, there might be some answers (for those who haven’t read the book – I mean, who reads books!?) that could provide some insight about his ideas on what privacy means.

Other small details I would like to point out: It clearly also uses the Facebook toolbar on the poster, with the website located where the search box is. It’s also using Firefox (tabs give it away), and using a Mac (sidebar).

You can have a look at the movie’s poster, after the jump.

Robot teachers coming to South Korea in 2012

By Terence Huynh on February 23rd, 2010 No Comments

Is this the start of robot domination? South Korea will now be going ahead of having robot teaching assistants, known as the R-Learning, and having them in at least 500 preschools in 2010 at a cost of 1 billion won, and an additional 40 billion won by 2012. By 2013, it would be present in 8000 preschools – so expect robots to be teaching your kids the alphabet (and possibly in binary).

Elementary schools could also be included in this program if it does bring some positive results; and parents will be also allowed to connect to the robots to check on their child’s progress and exchange messages. As well, it will be expanding internationally… so guess what Australia, you might be next.

Gamer makes Transformers All Sparks a reality – for his Xbox 360

By Terence Huynh on January 23rd, 2010 1 Comment

So, since we are heading towards a long weekend, why not post some gadget-craving blog posts, since we’ve been a bit slow on the gadgets news since CES (and trying to get back into the habit of blogging). We turn our attention to this All Spark from Transformers  – wait, what? Isn’t that supposed to be fictional? Turns out, it’s real but not what you expect it to be.

A gamer known as GivinTats has decided to make his own All Spark from the movie Transformers as a case mod for his Xbox 360. Plus, its fully functional. Granted, these are from 2007 – when the first movie came out – so don’t hold your breath if he still has this with him. Still, its a wickedly cool mod. More images below.

Peter Jackson seeks extras for The Hobbit

By Terence Huynh on December 31st, 2009 1 Comment

hobbit New Zealand is set to become Middle Earth again as the next movie, and the prequel to the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is set to be in production soon; and now, fanboys of the series can actually become extras in the film. Applicants need to send their applications via the old snail mail with a casting video, headshot and a full body shot; and have to be legally allowed to work in New Zealand.

Also, according to Collider, locals will be considered first – so if you happen to be there in New Zealand reading this blog post, go get yourself a tax number. You will also need to be there for the entire shoot, which presumably means that you are going to stay there for a long, long time.

Though, if you happen to a total Lord of the Rings fanboy, you might as well try your luck in becoming an extra.

Psystar sells T-shirts to get support for more “consumer rights” from Apple

By Terence Huynh on December 29th, 2009 No Comments

psystar-tops

Despite a legal ruling basically destroying their entire business, Psystar is still screaming and looks like its still pushing ahead with its “consumer rights” approach that the Mac OS should not be tied with Apple’s own hardware, but its totally not-stylish and not n00b-friendly hardware should be allowed to use the OS because you have chosen to do (because you bought it from them).

That’s why they decided to get on a fundraising drive and are selling T-shirts with “I sued Psystar and all I got was a lousy injunction”. Still, I really don’t care. I would take Apple’s own hardware any day of the week. But, if you’re really into their cause, you can purchase the shirt for $15.

Rumour: Heroes told to prepare for ending

By Terence Huynh on November 1st, 2009 No Comments

HEROES -- Pictured: "Heroes" Logo -- NBC Photo

RUMOUR MILL: It looks like Heroes could be given its final chapter, with rumours of its demise circling around the web today. Sources talking to sci-fi site Airlock Alpha has said that executives from NBC (the channel that airs it in America) have told producers to wind down the series, with the finale pencilled in in May.

“There isn’t much happening with this show in terms of audience, and giving it a ‘final chapter’ feel is something the network is considering to help allow the show to go out with a bang,” the source said.

Heroes started off with a bang with it being the most buzzed show on NBC. A year later, however, audiences started shifting away, finishing second to Lost. But by its third season, it lost 29 percent of its audience from a year before. This year, it is at its lowest, averaging only 3.6 million and is 45 percent down from season two, and it is the lowest rated show on the network, and last out of all the free to air networks in the United States.

NBC, however, has denied the claims, but has not confirmed the future of the show.

Heroes moves from Seven to 7TWO, its new digital channel that launches today at noon, with a brand new timeslot on 8:30PM Wednesday with a double episode.

Your brain never looked so delicious

By Terence Huynh on October 18th, 2009 4 Comments

zombie-cupcakes

Don’t worry, those aren’t real brains, but are perfect for the next time that a zombie comes up to your front door (before you shoot it). Flickr user xsomnis has made these Brain Cupcakes, which are just red velvet raspberry cupcakes with French vanilla cream cheese frosting with the brain being made out of chocolate. That blood you see is just caramel sauce with food colouring.

If you are going to try and make them, she has posted the recipe online with photos so you know what to do visually and not mentally.
