MySpace users will now be able to connect to sites that support OpenID with their MySpace account, joining the already 120 million+ who currently have an OpenID in use. It will join Yahoo, Flickr, Blogger and AOL in using the new login standard.

OpenID’s way of logging in is you type in a special URL, depending on which of your accounts support OpenID. They usually are just blogs, or links to your profile - but some, like Yahoo, need you to type in their address and you login on their site.

MySpace will become a provider, giving accounts to users, and will allow them to access other OpenID-supported sites, like TECHGEEK.com.au and Twitterfeed, or known as "relaying parties". But, however, you will not be able to use your current OpenID to login to MySpace.

Did you know you can use your OpenID to comment on TECHGEEK.com.au. It is a much easier way to have your say. Log In now!

The San Francisco city mayor has managed to get the access codes to the hijacked city’s network after its network administrator locked out the administrators out and blocked access to much of the city’s information - including payrolls, booking records and police data.

Terry Childs, the perpetrator, was reportedly refused to surrender the codes to his bosses, but he had a change of heart and gave the codes to Mayor Gavin Newsom in a meeting arranged that also saw the police and district attorney not informed of the meeting ahead of time.

The codes given did not provide access to the system initially, but after a call to his attorney, the network was back and running normally. However, it does not mean he is freed just yet; with Childs’ attorney is expected to cite his cooperation during a court hearing to have his $5 million bid reduced.

Tourism Australia is now looking for a brand new web hosting company that will host, support and maintain the Australia.com website for two years. The website was created to promote Australia on the web.

The agency employs 250 employees in 15 offices, and is in charge of convincing tourists to come to Australia; and has been re-developing the website. The new tender will see the contract winner hosting, supporting (including security) and maintaining the new site.

Seven million unique visitors visit the site annually within its eight versions of the site for other languages, including English. Out of the visitors, 80 percent come from the United States, UK and Asia.

All we have to say is - good luck!

While it beats the previous "king" from Vodafone, which had 5GB for $39, it does not have better coverage than its competitors, but less. And if you are ‘unlucky’ to go out of the area and roam into Telstra’s territory, also known as their GSM network, you will pay fees of $1.65/MB.

Even though eBay has backed down from a policy of using PayPal exclusively, it has made it a permanent fixture on all auctions; even though it has allowed the use of other payment options.

The disgruntled eBay sellers’ group’s spokesperson has said that "eBay have been and continue to pursue through stealth the objective denied it by the ACCC," and has also written to the ACCC and other relevant authorities.

However, the Reserve Bank has said that it had just receive the letter and has not made any response to the letter.

The settlement will see Icahn, who owns 68.7 million shares (or 4.98% of Yahoo’s common stock), joining the Yahoo board and withdraw his proxy battle. This will also see another board member Robert Kotick not seeking re-election.

The launch of the MobileMe service from Apple, which was to replace the .mac service, has been a complete failure as Apple was forced to give a free month to users for a second time.

The new service allows users to sync calendars, contacts, emails and data to PCs, Macs and iPhones for $119 a year. However, the service has been plagued with problems since the launch, when it was knocked offline for several days so Apple could fix bugs and its server load.

Its biggest selling point is its “cloud computing” - which allows users to sync important data to a server, without losing the data. This means that if you had several photos that you want to keep, you can put them on a server that will sync the data to the other computers connected and the iPhone itself - so you can edit, view or regain the files if you lose them.

Now, just over a week later, users are experiencing several problems accessing their email, with some experiencing sync problems with Outlook.

In addition, it falsely charged some users with US$100 for a free trial account, instead of a $1 “preauthorization” charge. It has offered a free month to those affected.

Customers would have encountered problems as many checkouts were advising that vouchers were unavailable.

Bill Express had been the provider for iTunes gift cards since the introduction of the iTunes Store in Australia, but was placed into administration earlier this month.

However, other retailers like Big W, Dick Smith Electronics, Safeway and Woolworths are still selling the gift cards. This is because they use a different supplier - E-Pay.

O2 in the UK has plugged the security hole after it caused a storm of people angry with the service after it had been revealed that photos sent by MMS can be found with a simple Google search.

MMS messages are sent to its web server if the recipient does not have a compatible phone - like the iPhone 3G - and the recipient will receive a URL so that they can view the image themselves. But it had been discovered it could be accessed by a simple InURL search on Google.

It has taken down the server, with people attempting to view the site are now redirected to an Apache server error. The leak - many containing images of children - was embarrassing to the company, as it also runs a site that is dedicated to protecting children online.

The ABC has launched its rental and download service called ABC Shop Downloads, after an eight-month development period. However, there are just a few things wrong with it - and it has nothing to do with the content, which consists of current hits like the Chaser to vintage, archived programming like Aunty Jack.

For most programs, you can rent programs for unlimited viewing during a seven day period for $2.95. However, it will offer several programs as free downloads for testing purposes. You will, however, still need to register your credit card for the free downloads, but they say it won’t result in charges.

The service was developed by Hyro and uses Windows Media technologies and Microsoft’s Flash competitor Silverlight. And since it uses Windows Media and its DRM, you will not be able to play anything on a Mac or Linux computers except previews.

But, they are planning to move once Silverlight 2 is out for the Mac, and will be using PlayReady later in the year.

Yes, and it sucks - and I would not bother to try it; unless you want to see Chaser recaps and vintage ABC programs. This is not a review - I have not reviewed it, but based it with information made available from many sources.

Facebook is set to get a new look to reflect on how its members (like us) communicate with each other. The new design, which will be unveiled to the public on Monday, will see an expanded Wall - where everyone can leave comments and photos, which will include the user’s Mini-Feed.

This comes after MySpace revamped most of its site, but not its profile section. Both are, however, reducing their pages to make it load faster and reduce the clutter which has plague them so much.

However, the new design, which several members had a peak, has faced a lot of criticism over it was not really helped them.

Get ready for a change soon - and expect a review of it soon.

The Ministry of Defence in the UK has admitted that another laptop with "sensitive information" has been stolen while one of its officials checked out of Britannia Adelphi in Liverpool’s city centre on Thursday. This comes after the Ministry was forced to admit that it had lost 658 laptops between 2004 and 2007. This now brings the total to 659.

It had previously admitted that it had lost 347, but had to revise that number after "anomalies in the reporting process" were discovered. Merseyside police is reported to be investigating the situation.

Paris-based security firm Intego has released the very first antivirus software for the iPhone. However, it does not run on the phone itself, but on a user’s Mac.

The software, Virus Barrier X5 10.5.3, would be able to scan the iPhone for viruses by copying the files to the Mac for a security check, once the user has plugged in the cable and is connected to the Mac itself. The company claims that since Apple has opened it its SDK, users would be at risk of installing apps that would harm the devices, or even take control of them.

There is, however, only one known malware that is publicly known. Antivirus vendors have predicted that since the iPhone is running a stripped down version of Mac OS X, it would lead to an increase of malware on all Mac OS X, but currently the threat is low; but other vendors are agreeing that the Apple App Store can be hijacked.

MySpace is a popular social networking site which allows you to customize everything - but that is not our tutorial for today. This tutorial is basically for the comments, where you can add images and change colours to text, among other things.

But many, like new users, do not know what <b> means. So, TECHGEEK is pleased to bring out the basics of HTML.

This tutorial is to be used with MYSPACE ONLY! Many new social networks use XHTML, which is a variation of HTML and there are things under this lesson which are not supported. You can comment on the TECHGEEK blog, however, do not use this tutorial - a follow up will be up soon (like next week.)

Like this Tutorial? Need your questions answered? Suggesting a new tutorial? Comment below!

HTML Tags

HTML tags follow a simple principal - less than sign-attribute-greater than sign. That’s it. However, you need to make sure you close the tag, or else it would not stop doing the certain attribute. To stop it, put it after the sentence or word you want the attribute and repeat the same thing, but put in a forward slash before the attribute.

Hint: All attributes will be bolded.

Bold, Underline and Italicise your words.

HTML is like a .doc file, it is all written in codes - however, in Microsoft Word, you do not see the codes for yourself as you type what you see. HTML is the back-end for all websites, and is need to be written correctly so it can render, or be read by your web browser, correctly.

Like Microsoft Word; you can make your text bold, underlined or italicised. To make a font bold, replace the word "attribute" from the above section with b. Your code should be, if the sentence was TECHGEEK.com.au would be: <b>TECHGEEK.com.au</b>.

To make text italicised, you just replace the attribute to i - that simple. Underline is also the same, just replace it with a u. The code should now be, for italics: <i>TECHGEEK.com.au</i>; and for underlining TECHGEEK.com.au, it should be: <u>TECHGEEK.com.au</u>.

Links, Embed and Images

Adding links just requires you to do the following: Use the less than sign-attribute-greater than sign, and replace "attribute" with a. Now add a space between a and the greater than sign and type in: href=". Now go to where you want to link to and copy and paste the URL after the quotation mark. Now close the quotation mark and type in a message, like Click Here. Close the tag.

This should be it, if you want to link to TECHGEEK: <a href="http://techgeek.com.au">Click Here</a>.

Images, however, require you to replace "attribute" to img. Now, just like the a attribute, you will need to put something else in it. Put a space and type in src=", and go find your image and its URL - an easy way is to right click on the image and click "View Image" and copy the URL. Now paste it after the quotation mark and close it. Now close the tag. You do not need to put anything between the tags.

It should be this, if I was taking the TECHGEEK Logo and putting it on a comment: <img src="http://techgeek.com.au/wp-content/themes/rnb/img/techgeek.png"></img>. You can also resize it by putting widths and heights, but we will do that in later tutorials.

Embedding Videos, however, is the most simple thing there is. You just need to go on Youtube or any video site and copy the embed code.

Change my font colour and size

Follow the less than sign-attribute-greater than sign basics, and replace the attribute with font. Now put a space and type in size=", and put any size you want the font to be. The font sizes are following the same ones you see on Word, so do not make them too big, or too small. After choosing a size, close the quotation mark. Now go to the end of the word or sentence and close the tag.

It should be: <font size="15">TECHGEEK.com.au</font>.

Now, this is where it gets easy. Changing the font size and colour are under the same tag, so you can just do the same thing as above. For colour, add a space and type in color=" (Note the American spelling). Now, you need to find something called a Hex Code. This is basically the computer’s way to make colours. You can also type in red, black, green, blue, etc.; but they do not understand the concept of dark blue or light blue.

To find the hex code of your colour, visit this site.

After choosing on a colour, now close the quotation marks. If you haven’t closed the tag, close it now. It should now look like this: <font size="15" color="black">TECHGEEK.com.au</font>.

You do not have to have size and colour in the same tag, you can have a <font size="15"> tag and a <font color="black">, but not next to each other.

Is there an easier way?

Yes there is. For Firefox users, you can install an extension called BBCode. This will allow you to format your comments easier with BBCode (for forums), XHTML (for example, the comment form in TECHGEEK) and HTML (for Myspace). If you have not gotten a single word of this, or just need an easier way to do this, this is a great plugin.

How it works is that you just right click on a text box and you should see BBCode. You will need, however, to configure the options to show HTML tags.

Facebook is pursuing a lawsuit against the German social network, StudiVZ; for infringing on the "look, feel, features and services" of Facebook.

The service claims that it has 10 million active members, and it is the largest German speaking social network, covering Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. The site, actually, has three parts to suit different school year levels - like Studivz.net is a site for college-aged students, Schuelervz.net for high school students and Meinvz is for older adults.

As well, the company has other sites in Italian (Studiln.it), French (StudiQG.fr), Polish (Studentix.pl) and Spanish (Estudiln.net). And, all have the same design.

It does actually have a claim, as the site does actually look like Facebook, but just in German/French/Polish/Spanish/Italian and in red. (Image from TechCrunch) (NB - That is obviously not the real Mark Zuckerberg (or is it?).

Apple is currently in discussions with music companies to allow customers to have unlimited access to the entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices (presumably for the life of the device).

The plan sounds similar to Universal’s Total Music Plan in which the cost of music is embedded into the music player itself. Based on the wording of this article, it seems Apple’s version of the plan adds the cost on top of the iPod or iPhone.

The negotiations are currently being held up due to disagreements in pricing. Apple is reportedly only offering $20 per device, while Nokia is playing almost $80/handset for a similar plan. Other possibilities appear to include a subscription based service for iPhone users ($7-8/month, for example) with the capability to keep up to 40-50 tracks/year even after the subscription lapses.

Historically, the Financial Times has been a reliable source of information with early details of Apple’s plans to introduce iTunes Movie rentals well ahead of its release,

Internode has announced that it has started supporting the new IPv6, which allows a vast number of new and longer IP addresses after the current shortage on the current system, IPv4. It will operate the new network around Australia and with international PoP (Points of Presence) in Japan and the US.

Customers of Internode can access IPv6 by either Native Ethernet access or Tunnel Broker access; with more information on their dedicated website. However, not all sites are supported on IPv6; and Internode will run both on their services; also known as ‘dual stack’ mode.

Its Managing Director, Simon Hackett, said it was was part of future-proofing its entire network, saying, "The Internet is approaching an address crunch point in the next few years."

"The current IPv4 address space is simply running out of IP numbers, possibly as soon as 2011. Internode has chosen to invest in deploying IPv6 technology throughout its network now to give its customers the maximum amount of time to transition their own networks to the new address scheme."

It is the first and only one to introduce the new address system, joining several ISPs in France and the Netherlands. You can find more information on Wikipedia or on Internode’s website.
