Welcome to the Morning Briefing for the 24th of May, where we highlight the tech stories from across the web that broke while you were sleeping and what we are watching here at TECHGEEK.com.au.

Here’s what we are watching:

Microsoft seemed to have overdone the whole boot optimisation, with Windows 8 ready to run in under seven seconds. Because of this, the window in which users can interrupt the boot sequence, is 200ms. That is too short for the majority of us, humans.

Telstra have unveiled their first 4G Windows Phone, being the HTC Titan 4G. The phone, featuring a 4.7″ display, and powered by a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S2 chip, will have access to speeds up to 40Mbps wherever 4G is available. The Titan is the third 4G device to be sold in Aus (compatible with our infrastructure, *cough* iPad), trailing after the Samsung Galaxy SII 4G and the HTC Velocity, both of which run Android and from Telstra.

The key ‘rickrolling’ video, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, was temporarily taken off YouTube yesterday. AVG Technologies, despite being a computer software company, has claimed copyright against the video. Ars are still unsure of how AVG managed to get the video blocked. Interesting.

Finally, on the Google vs Oracle front, Oracle appear to be losing. The jury yesterday found that Google had not infringed on either of Oracle’s two Java related patents. Oracle, now, isn’t likely going to much more than some minor damages, for a ‘copied function’. Having said this, Oracle may get a chance to retry this case, though the likelihood of that is still unclear.

Here’s what we are watching:

The Wall Street Journal has said that sources have claimed the next generation iPhone will feature larger screen. Apple is reportedly ordering 4 inch screens for the ‘iPhone 5′. This isn’t too much of a difference in size compared to the likes of Galaxy Nexus, but is still an increase over the currently standard 3.5 inch screen.

The Pirate Bay was offline around 24 hours yesterday as a result of a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack. The website, which most poeple visit to download material of questionable legality, have their suspicions as to who was behind the attack. This comes just a week after The Pirate Bay critised the actions of Anonymous against Virgin Media.

Telstra, in response to Delimiter’s request for images of their network in pristine condition, have declined to share any photos. This follows an image gallery published by Delimiter in May outlining the ‘worst of the worst’ of our copper network in Aus. Instead of sending any images, Telstra sent a rather generic outline of their network.

Finally, LG have released an update to their custom Android UI, Optimus UI, bringing it to version 3.0. This is seen as a catch up move in order to realign themselves with other custom Android UIs like HTC Sense. This update, which is only be available to Ice Cream Sandwich phones, brings some rather useless features. As you can tell, I’m not a fan of these custom UIs.

Welcome to the Morning Briefing for 10th of May 2012, where we highlight the tech stories from across the web that broke while you were sleeping and what we are watching here at TECHGEEK.com.au.

Here’s what we are watching:

Apple have released Lion 10.7.4 to consumers. This update features many improvements and, shall we say, ‘bug fixes’. According to Engadget, this update also seems to includes the FileVault security issue.

The Google+ iOS app has received a rather comprehensive update. Well, total redesign. The app now looks quite nice, though I’m only speaking from the screenshots in the attached article. I’m not too sure whether this will increase the usage of the currently failing social network, but it certainly looks good!

Microsoft have filed a patent for a pressure sensing controller. This controller will be able to identify users based on their hand pressure signature. Now that sounds interesting! Next Xbox here we come.

Eric Migicovsky, the creator the Pebble e-ink watch, hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on reddit to answer some questions about the device. Hardware wise, there will be no changes to the watch before it is released. Migicovsky and his team are currently working on getting the software preped for release. It was also said that Windows Phone support will not be included because of the lack of “Bluetooth SPP API’s”.

Finally, if you were hanging out for the new edition of Bioshock, you’d better be patient. The release date has been pushed back to the 26th of Feb next year. The reasoning behind this, “to make the game even more extraordinary.” Well that is the wrap-up of the 10th of May.

Welcome to the Morning Briefing for 3rd May 2012, where we highlight the tech stories from across the web that broke while you were sleeping and what we are watching here at TECHGEEK.com.au.

Here’s what we are watching:

Microsoft are dropping the Windows Live branding which was introduced in 2005 in favor of a Microsoft account. This account can be used with all existing Windows Live services, Windows 8 and Windows phone. Nothing drastic is happening here, just Microsoft confusing more consumers with different names.

Nokia are joining the suing game by launching lawsuits against HTC, RIM and Viewsonic. According to Nokia, there are 45 (unspecified) patents being infringed. Sounds like someone need some attention and/or money.

Apple have updated Mountain Lion’s notification system to include a “do not disturb” button. Hopefully I don’t need to outline its function. This button is accessible by opening the OS X notification center and it sits at the top of the window/bar/column. As Ars hints, this may be an indicator of a similar function heading to iOS.

Finally, there is a Steve Jobs documentary airing tonight on ABC. Named “Billion Dollar Hippy”, it will give us an insight into the life he who gave us many “i” products. This seems to be one of many documentarys/presentations of Steve Job’s life, one which I will be tuning in and watching.

Well lately on Delimiter, there has been a lot of talk about the NBN and what will form this National Broadband Network. Now yes, I am a NBN supporter, for obvious reasons. We all know Australia isn’t renowned for its internet access and this can be accredited to many things, but something needs to be done about it.

Telstra’s network. Certain aspects of it have been in existence for several decades. It works, for the most part. It is used every day for everything from calling family to sharing files, with strangers, on the other side of the continent.

To liken it to something which we all have experience with, cars. They age, and as they age, they need more maintenance. This can lead to them being increasingly prone to breaking down, and because of this, becoming more expensive to run. In many ways, this is true of Telstra’s network.

Something needs to be done about it…

Aspects of this network need to be upgraded, repaired, and expanded upon in order to accommodate Australia’s growing population and our hunger for a better connection. At the moment, Telstra are only just keeping up with everything.

I myself only have access to ADSL 1. Yet I live in one of the larger suburbs of eastern Melbourne. It was only in February of this year that Telstra upgraded the horribly congested back-haul to my exchange, allowing me to now get speeds of around 450kB/s. Pathetic for this day and age.

Distance: Because we Aussies have so much land, any infrastructure that is going to be installed here is going to be expensive and take time. That is just the nature of things. There is nothing we can do about it.

The NBN: There is quite of a lot debating/arguing in our government, as per usual. One topic of dialogue between Labor and Liberal is the NBN. They are both yet to agree on what they classify the NBN. Rudd and Gillard, with the help of that idiot, Conroy, have come up with what is known as a Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network. In this plan, the majority of houses in Australia will have a fibre optical connection to the rest of the internet. Through this connection, Australian residents will have access to speeds of 100Mbps downstream and 40Mbps upstream initially. There was talk, when details for this network were first released, of these speeds being upgradable to 1Gbps or even faster with relative ease.

Evidence time. Now Verizon have come out and stated that with FTTH networks, there will be reductions of up to 80-90% in the cost of maintaining said network compared to a copper network. Analysys Mason have also done some calculations and concluded that the on-going costs of a FTTH network will be “in the region of 30% lower than the costs of operating the current copper network”. Although there is a large discrepancy between the two estimations, they both still show that running a FTTH network will end up being cheaper in the long run.

The other plan, which Liberal are pushing, is the Fibre to the Node (FTTN) network. Effectively, this is what we already have in the majority of places, via Telstra’s network. The back-haul to the majority of exchanges in Australia is fibre. This connection is then shared across the hundreds, if not thousands of customers connected to that exchange. That is basically what a FTTN network entails.

Malcolm Turnbull said this week that the cost of maintaining Telstra’s current copper network is cheaper than alternative solutions. Sure it may be cheaper, but hell, Aussies are already behind in the internet connectivity department and by the looks of it, some who should care, really don’t.

At the moment, maintaining our current copper/cable network is all well and dandy but we don’t even know what this cost Turnbull mentioned is or what it is based on. If we want to continue to use our current network for the next decade, there will need to be some major upgrades happen.

Aussies are already behind in the internet connectivity department and by the looks of it, some who should care, really don’t

Peter Cochrane, a well-known UK telecommunications expert and ex BT (British Telecom) CTO has expressed his thoughts on FTTN networks, saying they are a “mistake”. He outlined that they end up limiting the bandwidth available to the customer as well risking the reliability of the network.

The FTTN network which BT are currently rolling out, can achieve speeds up to 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up. We already have faster cable internet available in Australia! Yet, despite this, Turnbull is using BT’s FTTN network as an example of his version of the NBN. This type of network is little, if not, no improvement over Telstra’s current network. (What an idiot!)

We need the NBN. And not what Liberal is calling the NBN. We need the FTTH NBN. There is no denying it. If Australia wants to keep up with the times, something needs to be done and as with anything, there is always an initial cost. But it is not as if the end result is not going to match that cost, which shouldn’t be a problem once the network is fully installed.

Here’s what were watching:

WWDC has been announced, for June 11- 15th, and tickets sadly have already sold out. It took a mere 2 hours for that to happen. This year, Apple are expected to show off Mountain Lion and iOS 6, of which the latter should ship alongside the next iPhone around September, according to TechAU.

There has been quite a serious backdoor found in some mission critical equipment, equipment used in electrical substations and other equipment that we rely on rather heavily. This backdoor has been found in RuggedCom’s Rugged OS and all you need to do in order to crack the password, is have the MAC address, which when input into a Perl script will give you the password to this device. What is even worse about this is that you cannot modify this account leaving many organisations needing to buy/upgrade their equipment.

Telstra are, according to WPDownUnder, going to launch the HTC Titan II 4G in May. This phone is has quite a nice design as well as being pretty powerful, featuring a 1.5Ghz Snapdraggon S2 processor, 4G radio and a 4.7″ display. If this does turn true, this would be the first 4G Windows Phone device in Australia.

And finally, Microsoft is rumoured to be showing off its Zune replacement at E3 this year. It is said to be a music streaming service with Facebook integration, a ‘scan and match’ feature, but no browser plug-ins. The source has also mentioned that this service is expected to launch alongside Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

Here’s what we are watching:

At the Microsoft Management Summit, in Las Vegas, Microsoft have given “Windows Server 8″ an official name, “Windows Server 2012″ and have confirmed they want to have it shipping later this year. They also showed off System Center 2012, which allows for management of the server and services on it though IE or an application on the server itself.

The Google TV has received an update, mainly to the ‘TV and Movies’ section of the device. This update will make is ‘smarter’ and ‘easier’ to watch content. This update includes a revamped which provides more information about TV shows you want to watch, as well as what is currently on TV.

Apple has released Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 to developlers today. This update touts many minor improvements/bug fixes to improve you experience in Mountain Lion. Apart from this, not much has been said though Apple have listed bugs they already know exist with DP 3.

Google Cloud Print has received an update, which brings Android integration. This is a long awaited update, as now what had to be done by unofficial apps, can now be done by Google. I have been using Google Cloud Print for a while and I must say, is it pretty good. Now that I can print from my phone, even better. We will bring you more on this later.

Today must be a day for updating things. Draw Something has received an update, after being purchased by Zynga. This update includes an undo feature, pull to refresh, and finally notifications for Android users.

And finally, within the space of 24 hours, Microsoft have lost two employees. Karen X Cheng, who was working on Office 15, has quit with aid of a music video. The other, Gavin Kim, who was the Windows Phone Marketing Chief, has left for personal reasons.

The iPad 3 display. What some might say is the defining feature of the third generation Apple tablet. It may be one of the main features of this latest edition to Apple’s product line, but is it any good? Can it be classified as revolutionary?

Before I start proving my point, let us just define “revolutionary.”

revolutionary: refers to something that has a major, sudden impact on society

Personally, the new display in the iPad 3, isn’t revolutionary. It just isn’t. It isn’t a “major, sudden impact on society.” Before you confuse me for a hater, I do like the new display. Things on it, look great. Especially text rendering, text even when zoomed up to 30x-40x it’s original size, looks great.

This display is a really nice addition to the iPad line, one which was needed after the iPhone 4 received its high resolution display. Apple’s engineers have done a good job of fitting a display that has this high resolution, into a device which is smaller than an A4 piece of paper. All whilst maintaining the 10 hours battery life.

This is all well and good, but this update to the iPad was rumoured and almost expected to come a whole year earlier, with the iPad 2.

It started to get to the point where people may start to accuse Apple of neglecting the iPad, if they didn’t update the display. This is hardly the definition of a revolution. I remember the morning after the iPad 3 announcement, feeling quite under-whelmed by the whole ordeal. This display update was rumoured for several months before the announcement, hence that feeling when nothing else, apart from faster graphics were announced.

On the other hand, when the iPhone 4 was announced, the ‘retina’ display was revolutionary. It lead to Apple’s competition, revamping their phones to include higher resolution, better looking screens. Apple is definitely a big trend setter in this regard, where they have other manufacturers chasing to catch up to them. But I’m sorry, I just don’t find this resolution bump in the iPad, revolutionary.

Note: this can also be found on Tom’s personal blog here.

Well I got the opportunity to play with an iPad 3, so immediately I grabbed my camera and set to work. I do apologise for the poor lighting of the photos, and I intend on taking some nicer photos at a later date. But for now, enjoy what you have either already experienced, or just plainly don’t care about.

<del>Well, well, well. Apple has taken down it’s Australian site to make space for an announcement regarding an iTunes update. According to Apple, tomorrow will be a day we will never forget. It will be interesting to see what this update will entail, new features being introduced, and maybe a new logo (well we haven’t forgotten that update). If I have done my maths correctly, this unforgettable update will go live at midnight tonight.</del>

This isn’t an error. Twitter today announced that by May 1, the famous, worldwide service will have been shut down. This move has come after a string of reports claiming that Twitter has become to powerful for its own good. The reports claim that Twitter has been able to control everything in peoples lifes from what they wear, to what they want to call their child.

In response to these reports, Twitter has announced the closing of their service, used by billions every day. In the statement, Twitter confirmed the early reports saying

We know we have become to powerful. Having this much power is not good. To prevent our service from turning into a mainstream version of Anonymous, we are closing our doors.

Some, especially avid Twitter addicts, have shunned the decision, claiming that Twitter’s executives have all the money they want so they no longer care about Twitter and also do not want to lose their, rather large, fortune. Others have said that they think Twitter has done this as a preventative measure to ensure Twitter does not die following the likes of My______ (MySpace) or soon to be dead, Facebook.

There are rumors that people are starting to organise “Occupy Twitter” protests, on Twitter. They will only last so long.

One can only wonder if, in the post-Twitter world, will people move to a competitive service like Heello or will another service rise into place. We shall see. If you want to find us, here is a link to our Google+ account.

Note: It’s 12pm – meaning that April Fools foolery has come to an end. And thankfully, Twitter isn’t shutting its doors.

As you can read from the above image, Logitech appear to be announcing something ‘here’ (Facebook maybe?), at 10pm, next Tuesday. From the the rather blurry outline, it appears that this new product of theirs is going to be some sort of speaker dock, maybe with something to do with the iPad 3. Oh my, the Logitech fan-boys, a group which doesn’t exist, are going to be happy about that!

Maybe, just maybe, I am bring a tad harsh on Logitech. Though I still can’t help feel that they just copied Apple with this announcement. I will give them credit for trying something different, something other that the usual, boring “look at our new line of products that no one will ever notice”. But next time, try to be different. Please.

Logitech Australia has since removed this picture from their Facebook page. Maybe they saw this?

Today, Vodafone unveiled their pricing/plans for the new iPad. They are the first of the three major Australian carriers to release this information. Unfortunately, you currently aren’t able to order/pre-order any of these plans through Vodafone, though this should be possible soon with the imminent release of ‘the new iPad’.

Vodafone’s plans range from 12 to 24 month contracts, with prices starting from $47 a month (24 month, iPad 16GB, 2GB of data), right up to a whopping $133 per month (12 month, iPad 64GB, 18GB of data). I do question why one would ever spend that much money, especially with Vodafone, who we all know don’t have the strongest of networks. For more information, head over to Vodafones website.

Sunday afternoon. It is hot outside and in. I am at the computer surfing when an interesting image was re-tweeted by Steve Troughton-Smith. The image was of a Nokia N9 running the, what you might say, famous app, Talking Tom. The image caught my attention because of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons on the bottom of the screen which means Android 4.0 is now running on the Nokia N9. Alexey Roslyakov, aka @drunkdebugger, is the person respondsible for this hack.

I must admit, I had seen other images from Roslyakov of the N9 running Android 4.0 but they showed that the porting process was still in early stages. Now, it looks like the N9 is able to run Android apps. Roslyakov said via his twitter that both Angry Birds and Talking Tom work. Android apps that require sound also work though he says “there is no real sound yet (work in progress)”.

The Nokia N9 is a phone that Nokia themselves, and a minority of consumers, were very excited about. Personally, the design of the phone is great, and I would have bought one immediately if it wasn’t for MeeGo. With the ability to now get Android 4.0 running on it, I wouldn’t mind picking one up just for the fun of it.

Unfortunately, you can’t get your N9 to run ICS at this point in time though we will keep you updated as to the progress of this port.

The iPad version of TweetBot has pretty much all the functionality found in the iPhone and iPod touch version, just on a bigger screen (duh). This includes swiping left and right for conversations and replies, smart gestures (double and triple tapping on tweets and links), multiple timelines and much more.

For those of you who want to try and buy it, it is available for $2.99 here. Personally, if I had an iPad, Tweetbot for iPad would be on it the minute it was available download.

Recently, after upgrading to a usable phone with Ice Cream Sandwich on it, I have been on the hunt for useful apps. One of these hunts was for apps that could help with my commutes, so after hunting around the marketplace and questioning friends, here is what I use to help me get around. By the way, these apps are Melbourne, Australia specific so apologies if this bares no relevance whatsoever to you and your life. Enjoy!

Train Trapper

This app is nothing short of the best Melbourne public transport app. It is fast to load and picks the closest station to your current location and presents you with a list of which train will depart when, and to where. This is extremely handy when you are roaming around the city, wander into a train station and want to catch the next train without any hassle which we had plenty of experience doing during CES.

This app also displays whether the train is cancelled or delayed and a short explanation as to what happened. Unlike the Metlink, featured later, it is really easy to read and interpret allowing for easy commuting around the Melbourne Rail network.

You can download it for free here: http://tgau.co/traintrapper

Metlink

This app, put nicely has a horrible UX (user experience). It is just horrible. It just feels overcomplicated, is ‘thick’ menu wise and looks like something made by an amateur. In terms of functionality, it is pretty good at telling you when a bus is leaving, when a train will arrive and so on. Though that is about it. I have tried using its Journey planner many a time, only for it to produce the most incomprehensible, unreadable, irrelevant garbage. So please, for the love of God, don’t use this app for anything other than an interactive timetable!

Though, do note that this app is still in beta so fingers crossed this Metlink work on this app and improve it to something a little more usable.

You can download the app for free here: http://tgau.co/metlinkapp

Metro Trains Mobile Site

Breaking the unwritten rules of an app wrap-up, this is actually a mobile website. There is nothing new here but this is where you go for an overview of the status of the Metro train network. Basically, the website only contains one useful webpage, which is the summary page so I can’t blab on here too much. This website also links to the Metlink app; an online timetable; a news page; and a 404 page. How nice of them.

Unlike Metlink, Metro have done quite a nice job with this website, making it also very readable and interpretable on the move. This is something I can see coming in handy in a time of chaos and confusion.

You can access the website here: http://m.metrotrains.com.au/

Tram Hunter

This is an app, which I have played with, but haven’t used on the go. Like Train Trapper, it is able to detect nearby stops (well as far as I know), browse by tram route, search for stops, and view stops on a map.

I am not a regular tram commuter so I don’t think I will ever clock up much experience with this app. though from playing with it, it is able to tell you when the next tram will leave, where and at which stop. This app is on par with the Train Trapper app in terms of design and functionality. I decided to include this because a friend recommended it to me, and I can see it being useful for some commuters.

You can download the app for free here: http://tgau.co/tramhunter

So that is it for my public transport apps. It is a little disappointing that both Metlink and Metro Trains haven’t been able to produce something that I am happy to use and able to commit to. Then again, when has the government done anything properly that they haven’t been forced to do… NBN… Sigh. Anyway, hope this helps!

After I finished writing and taking screenshots, Foursquare is now up and accessible. I checked my phone and was able to checkin at a local supermarket, so for now, everything is back online. We will update you when we find out more.

Now we all know that our phones are more powerful than a 10 year old desktop, though we aren’t really using this processing power for anything other than answering calls, texts, tweeting and checking Facebook. We have seen initiatives like the Raspberry Pi use this phone hardware for a cheap, low power desktop though nothing that really combines both the phone and desktop experience into one. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could walk into work, and not have to look at all the emails you have just read on your commute.

This is where Webtops come in. Except now Motorola have now decided to incorporate Webtop software into their latest phones. This enables users of those phones to not only use their phones for normal day to day mobile activities but also to plug in their phone to an dock/external screen and use it as a Webtop.

While using these phones as Webtops, you are able to use what Motorola call is the “complete Firefox” for “lightning fast” web browsing as well as a collection of web based Webtop apps. These apps include the likes of Google Docs, Citrix and Gmail. Motorola also sell docks for their Webtop enabled phones, but they don’t come cheap. With the Motorola Atrix dock coming in at $499 US, one would ask why not just buy a netbook or one of the cheap notebooks (of which there are a plethora to chose from).

Personally, I think this idea might take off if more phones start to support it. This could be the future of portable personal computing as most people have their phones on them everywhere they go. Hopefully the prices come down soon making this a more viable solution.
