Sony also revealed a couple of other devices at its Mobile World Congress press conference – including this new mid-range smartphone, the Xperia M2. The successor to the Xperia M released last year, the Xperia M2 features a 4.8-inch display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and 4G LTE support.

Other hardware specs include a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage (with a microSD card slot), and a large 2300mAh battery. All of this is enclosed in a smartphone body that makes the Xperia M2, according to Sony, the “thinnest” smartphone out of the mid-range phones.

Like all Xperia phones, it includes the unique camera apps such as Picture Effect and Timeshift burst; and access to Sony Entertainment Network, which gives users access to the latest music and movies from Sony Music and Sony Pictures. Xperia M2 users will also have the chance to download three movies from Sony Pictures via Sony Entertainment Network – including Captain Phillips and White House Down.

Sony has also said that there will be a dual SIM variant of the Xperia M2 – called the Xperia M2 dual. However, unlike the M2, the Xperia M2 dual will only support 3G.

The Xperia M2 will launch globally from April 2014. Sony Australia has confirmed that it is coming to Australia, but full details will be available when the launch date comes closer.
