Usually, mobile phones are launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But Sony has decieded to launch this smartphone at CES. The Xperia Z is being touted as the phone that has everything that Sony does best – technology, content, design, and connectivity.

“With Xperia Z, we are bringing over half a century of innovation in TV, imaging, music, film and gaming to create a superphone experience that truly stands out,” Kuni Suzuki, President and CEO of Sony Mobile. “With great specifications, Sony’s media applications, One-touch functions and outstanding battery life, Xperia Z is well positioned for leadership in the    smartphone market. By putting smartphones at the heart of our strategy, Sony is enabling people to create, enjoy and share content and experiences like never before.”

The Xperia Z features a 5-inch 1080p screen made with it’s Mobile BRAVIA-powered Reality Display, that brings razor sharp clarity thanks to its years in its TV business. The phone also features a 13-megapixel, fast-capture rear camera, and inside has the first image sensor – the Exmor RS – to have HDR video for smartphones.  Other internals include the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, Android Jelly Bean (upgradable to version 4.2 later on) and 4G LTE. The phone is also dust and water resistant.

In terms of content, it has access to not only Google’s own services, but Sony’s own WALKMAN application where you can access all your downloaded music and access the 18-milion song library from Music Unlimited. Being Sony, it also has access to Video Unlimited – where you can watch 100,000 movies and TV shows.

The Xperia Z will be out in this quarter globally. Sony has also said that some markets will have a design variant called the Xperia ZL, which is basically the same thing as the Z, except smaller.
