Porn to get its own .xxx domain option

ICANN, the organisation that oversees all domain names and registrations – including the familiar dot-com – is expected to give the go ahead for the controversial .xxx top-level domain (TLD) for websites containing pornography.

According to an ICAAN attorney talking to Reuters; despite initially against such a proposal, members of the board have argued that the creation on the basis to maintain neutrality in dealing with assignations. If calls are successful, then the porn industry will be allowed to register for a .xxx domain voluntary – once it passes through a due diligence test and negotiations on who will handle the domain (most likely ICM Registry, who has pushed this for a couple of years).

ICM has also proposed that the $60 proposed fee for a .xxx domain would go to child-protection groups, and that all content under the .xxx domain will be labelled – meaning it can be easier to prevent children from accessing these types of sites – unless, your children know how to use proxies.

This is not the first industry-specific TLD that ICANN has created: .aero, .mobi and .travel were created for the air-transport, mobile and travel industries.

However, the religious right and some within the pornographic industry have argued against such a proposal – with the religious right saying no to the creation of the domain on moral grounds – though they prefer anything that would get rid of porn and anything that harms the children – while the latter argues that it will invite censorship and ruin their businesses as all the porn sites will be on one domain, effectively allowing a simple wildcard block for the domain.

ICANN is expected to make its formal decision about the domain name on Friday.
