Japanese mobile network takes pounding from porn downloads

By on

Pornography downloads is said to be straining the US$74 billion, next generation wireless network in Japan, as many users opt to download their pornography on their mobiles, instead of using their PCs, because many have unlimited download caps.

According to Bloomberg, for unlimited Internet access, users would have to pay 6,300 yen (or US$66) a month on NTT DoCoMo. But because of the increasing use of downloading porn on your phone, the two largest carriers, NTT DoCoMo and KDDI Corp. have been forced to implement caps to ease the strain.

The network carrying the iPhone, Softbank (third largest carrier in Japan), is said to be considering adding restrictions on unlimited data plans.

Terminating the user accounts because of porn, however, is difficult as Japan’s privacy laws do not allow carriers to see what they download.

But it seems that the market is booming, as over 1,000 new customers sign up a day to use a big-name site that offers mobile downloads of porn, and it seems that users are said to pay 10,000 yen, or US$105. One company, Soft on Demand, has seen its revenues jump 40 percent higher this year to around 15 million yen.

And while music is the “official big earner”, it has been reported that porn, dating sites and fortune telling services have made more money than music downloads.
