iBurst to shut down network

iBurst, Australia’s first city-wide wireless network, will be shutting down after its operator announced to the media via an ASX announcement during trading hours in the stock market. The parent company, BIgAir Group, has only given the network less than three months to live, shutting the network in December.

BigAir Group Limited (ASX:BGL) announced today it has been notified by the Receivers for the Commander Group, McGrathNicol, that its bid to acquire the iBurst assets of Personal Broadband Australia (PBA) was unsuccessful.

The Company has been advised by the Receivers that they intend to discontinue the iBurst services and the network will be shut down and closed no later than December 19th 2008.

The announcement also states that the company will work with a “number of mobile wireless broadband services providers” to migrate customers.
