A Windows patch released by Microsoft last week has left call centres at Telstra and a local security software distributor flooded with enquiries after they lost their internet access after installing the update, which was to plug a security hole.

Customers using ZoneAlarm found that they had lost their connection altogether, forcing the company to say that it was "incompatible" with ZoneAlarm and the maker, Checkpoint, had released a patch for the problem.

Microsoft’s spokewoman has said to Australian IT that they had published instructions for addressing the problem, but did not reveal if the company will withdraw the patch from Windows Update temporarily.

Paymate, a service similar to eBay’s PayPal, has lodged a compliant with the competition regulator alleging that the auction site has breached the Trade Practices Act after eBay amended its user agreement so sellers must include PayPal as one of the payment options for every listing.

This conduct, Paymate says, restricts its ability (and other payment options) to be adopted on auctions hosted on the site since it mandates PayPal for selling objects.

The ACCC has not commented on the complaint, saying it does not comment on complaints received. There is also no mention of an investigation being done by the competition regulator.

eBay asked the ACCC for immunity after it planned to force all users to use PayPal or Cash on Delivery as the only payment options on the site, however that was rejected by the ACCC. It abandoned the plan on July 3.

Microsoft has announced that a brand new version of the Xbox 360 console will be out in August, selling for $349. That price was also the original price of the 20GB Xbox 360 Pro until it received a price cut, bringing it to $299.

The new console will come with a 60GB hard drive and will feature a "Upscaling DVD Player", meaning that if the Xbox 360 is connected with a HDMI cable, it will upscale the DVD to a near HD standard. It will also come with a wireless controller, headset and a one-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold.

It is unknown if it will reach Australia, but the new console will be out in the United States and Canada. It joins the Arcade pack, which sells for $279 and comes with 256MB of memory and five Xbox LIVE arcade games; and the Elite console, which comes with a 120GB hard drive and sells for $449.

Yesterday at 6am, the world’s oldest blogger passed away. Olive Riley, from the New South Wales’ central coast region, died at a nursing home at the age of 108. She will be mourned by her family and thousands who have read her blog at http://www.allaboutolive.com.au (which is apparently down) and http://worldsoldestblogger.blogspot.com/.

She had more than 70 posts on her blog, or what she called it, “blob”; sharing her experiences and life to a wide audience. However, illness made her stop blogging on June 26, saying, “I still feel weak, and can’t shake off that bad cough.”

She would have been 109 on October 20. Her funeral will be held later this week.

Network Ten has confirmed its often controversial reality TV program will be axed after eight years on the air.

The current series, which wraps up on July 21, will be the last.

In a statement issued on Monday, Ten’s chief programming officer, David Mott, confirmed the speculation which emerged on a Big Brother-related internet website on Sunday.

“After eight successful seasons and 1,316 episodes, Ten today announced that Big Brother will not be returning in 2009,” the Network Ten statement reads. “The 2008 season finale will air on Monday 21 July.”

Mr Mott also said the series was “ending on a high” despite flagging viewer numbers, and persistent questions by fans over the selection of radio personalities Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O to compere the 2008 series.

They replaced Gretel Killeen, who had hosted the show since the first episode.

“Big Brother is the undisputed grand-daddy of modern, commercial reality television in Australia,” Mr Mott said.

“Today’s reality dramas have all, on some level, been inspired by Big Brother. We are immensely proud of the show and the incredible success it has enjoyed since premiering in 2001.

“We’re ending the season on a high, largely thanks to the talents of Kyle and Jackie O, who have presented yet another successful season.”

Sandilands and Jackie O had come under fire from hundreds of fans on Big Brother forums and websites, with many calling for Killeen to be reinstated.

Speculation of the show’s axing started late Sunday on the internet website, Behind Big Brother.

“Our sources inside the Big Brother compound tell us the announcement was unexpected for the BB producers, who did what they felt was in the best interests of the show and believed this year would be a season benchmark,” the website said.

“We have also been informed the Big Brother concept will return to Channel 10. However, this won’t be seen until at least 2010. No word on whether this project is part of the Endemol Big Brother franchise.”

In Big Brother, a group of people are locked inside a house and filmed 24 hours a day at Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast before being voted off week by week over about three months. The concept runs in a number of countries, starting in the Netherlands in 1999.

The ratings for Big Brother have dwindled this year, although the introduction last week of sex symbol Pamela Anderson gave it its best results of the season.
