iTunes cracks 3 billion

By Terence Huynh on August 1st, 2007

iTunes has finally cracked the 3 billion mark since it’s launch April 2003, though it’s 1 billion songs was reached in February 2006.

In the first quarter of this year, it was ranked the third-biggest overall music retailer in the US, behind No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Best Buy, according to consumer surveys by The NPD Group. However, this was based on units sold, not revenue, and counted every 12 tracks purchased online, as it is an equivalent to an album.

In April, it had sold more than 100 million iPods five and a half years since it was first sold.

Shares of Apple fell $US9.71 ($11.34), or 6.9 per cent, to $US131.72 Tuesday.
